I could barely see what I was doing as I stirred the pasta into the sautéed vegetables and meat.

“Smells good,” Amy said, giving me a small smile. “I know I’ve been spending a lot of time with Colin and it seems like we hardly ever get to talk or just hang out. I thought we could…you know, hang out tonight.”

“Oh…” I frowned. “I don’t mind that you spend a lot of your time with the guy you’re so crazy about you can’t see straight.”

She laughed. “But still…”

“And we talk,” I added. “We talk and hang out.”

“Yeah, but not like before.” She grimaced. “I don’t even know what happened with the guy you met at Wild Things. I don’t know if you’ve met anyone else or if you’re doing your alone thing again.”

“I…” My web of lies was starting to get sticky. “Actually…I am seeing someone, and I’m meeting him for a drink tonight. I was just about to tell you that.”

Except both the guy from Wild Things and the guy I was meeting were one person—her brother.

“That’s great!” Amy said. “Anyone I know?”

I shook my head and added another lie. “Just some guy.”

“Okay.” She settled on a psychological drama and hit play. “I’ll just watch TV and stuff myself with stir-fry.” She laughed. “I’m actually looking forward to it.”

I made two plates and handed one to her, but I could barely eat. I was counting the minutes till seeing Jason. Amy lost interest in the drama after a while, so after lunch, she took out her computer and started editing some images.

Ordinarily, I would have found a book to read, something interesting and pleasant and sufficiently romantic, but all my book boyfriends paled in comparison with Jason.

With a few hours to go, I went to get ready.

I picked a dress, something short so it wouldn’t be in the way. I slipped on tiny satin and lace panties and a matching bra then, on second thought, discarded the panties. I brushed my hair, stained my lips with pink gloss, and then touched perfume to my nape and under my ears.

I was ready long before Jason arrived, and by the time I got his message saying he was parked around the corner, I was almost pacing. I dashed out of my room, coming to a stop in the living room when I saw that Amy had fallen asleep on the couch.

I paused long enough to remove her laptop from her lap and place it on the end table, then I arranged one of the throw pillows under her head, switched off the TV, and went to find a blanket to cover her with.

She smiled in her sleep and murmured a barely audible thank you.

I ignored the swell of guilt I felt about lying to her then retrieved my purse and phone and continued my journey to meet Jason.

I walked toward his car, he leaned over to open the passenger door. I slid inside and gave him a cool once-over. Of course, I felt far from cool and calm, and of course, he looked good enough to eat.

“Hey, hottie.” He gave me a languid glance. “You look good.”

“Thanks,” I replied, drinking in the sight of him. “I’d say the same about you, but you already know.”

He laughed softly and started the engine.

I expected him to drive straight to his apartment, but he didn’t. He took a few turns then slid the car into the entryway of a private lounge and bar I’d never heard of, handing the keys over to a valet before he led me inside with his hand placed at the small of my back.

“I thought we were going to your place,” I said, curious.

“We were,” he admitted. “I’ve been thinking of fucking you all day, but that can wait while I get to hang out in public with a total babe.” He gave me an appreciative glance and mimed a wolf-whistle.

I giggled and rolled my eyes at the insinuation that finding hot girls to hang out with could ever be a problem for him, but I was almost excessively and embarrassingly pleased at the compliment. “Hey,” I drawled, “I’m not some possession you get to show off.”

He only smiled, and his hand at my back moved lower, coming to rest on the curve of my hip. A hostess in a sexy minidress led us to a semi-private booth, and Jason slid in after me. “Don’t be impatient,” he told me. “I’m still going to fuck you…and taste you. I keep my promises.”

I exhaled audibly and distracted myself by looking around. There was muted jazz music coming from the speakers, and the seats were all a plush scarlet color. Art pieces hung on the dark mahogany walls, and many of the other guests looked like the kinds of people one saw in Fortune 500-type magazines.

The hostess took our drink orders, and as soon as she left us, Jason lowered his hand to my thigh and caressed it lightly, slowly moving it higher and higher.
