She took a deep breath then sat beside me again.
“Have I said thanks for coming with me?”
I nodded. “Twice.”
She chuckled. “I love you, Daphne, I really do.”
I put my arm around her. “I love you too, Amy Wild.”
We drew apart and a few minutes later, Amy’s face lit up as she dashed from her seat and ran up to where Colin was pulling a small piece of luggage through a pair of wide sliding glass doors.
She ran through the people milling around and launched herself into his arms. He let the suitcase fall to the ground as he gathered her to his body.
I got up, watching and smiling as they kissed and laughed then kissed and laughed again. A few people stopped to give them looks, but most of them just kept going until Co
lin drew back, kissed Amy again, and got to his knees.
“Oh my God!” I screamed, my eyes widening as I quickly opened the video app on my phone. I gathered Amy’s bag and mine and ran across the packed terminal, my phone held out in front of me as I tried to capture the moment my best friend would say yes to the man she loved.
I reached them just as Amy covered her face with her hands, laughing and crying at the same time. “Oh my God, Colin! Oh my God.”
He grinned. “I haven’t even said anything.”
“Then say it!” she cried, provoking amused laughter from a few onlookers.
Colin pulled a box out of his pocket. “I was going to wait a while,” he said, “but I can’t. I really don’t want to.” He took a deep breath. “Will you marry me, Amy Temperance Wild?”
“Damn right I will, you sexy Englishman!” She drew him to his feet, planting kisses all over his face while people cheered.
“Congratulations!” I called from behind my phone. I was taking my documentary duties very seriously.
They both grinned at me.
“Good to see you, Daph.” Colin exhaled. “Good to see you.”
“Good to see you, too.” I finally stopped the video and joined them for a group hug. I stepped back, and they kissed again. “I’m so happy for you two.”
Amy hugged Colin tight, all her nervousness from earlier turned into a clear bliss. “Thank you,” she mouthed at me.
“Any time,” I replied.
Later, after the cab had delivered Amy and Colin to his apartment, I directed the driver to drop me off at Jason’s place. I let myself in. I knew Jason wasn’t at home because he’d had to go to the office earlier.
The apartment was quiet. Somehow, it already felt like home. I suppose in a way it was since it was where Jason lived, and wherever he was, that would be my home.
For always.
One day, we would make it official, I was sure of that. I would promise to be his in front of everyone we knew and loved. It was something I’d always thought was impossible, something that wasn’t for me. Now, when I thought about it, I knew it would be the happiest day of my life.
I went to the bedroom and took off my shoes, placing them in the part of the walk-in closet that already contained a year’s worth of clothes, shoes, and accessories for me. They’d been delivered by a personal shopper, and all I had to do was pick out the ones I liked and send back the ones I didn’t. It was unnecessary and extravagant, but Jason claimed he wanted to make sure I never lacked anything when I spent the night.
Just as I contemplated whether to wait for Jason in the bed, the doorbell rang, and I frowned. I knew it couldn’t be Jason because he wouldn’t have to ring the bell.
I slipped my feet into a pair of slippers and made my way to the foyer. There was a small panel in the wall close to the door, and inside was a screen that showed the area just outside. It revealed Vince, one of the doormen from the downstairs reception desk.
I opened the door.
“Sorry to disturb you, ma’am,” he said politely. “There’s someone downstairs to see Mr. Wild. She’s not on the visitor’s list, but she…” He paused.
