The Heir Affair (Las Vegas Nights 5)

“She says you should come in.”
“She wasn’t too happy about the idea earlier.” Kyle knew he was being stubborn, but he had a point to make and she’d started it. “I’m fine right here.”
“Suit yourself. I talked to Nate and he agrees about you taking her to LA for a while.”
“Great.” A weight was already lifting off Kyle’s shoulders. “Now all we have to do is come up with a reasonable explanation for her to go.”
“Already in motion.”
Dawn was pushing salmon and gold into the sky when Kyle heard a knock on his car window. He’d been staring toward the street and didn’t notice Melody approaching from the house. He rolled down
the window.
“I thought you would’ve given up and gone home by now,” she said, setting her hands on the door and leaning down. “You look like hell.”
“Good morning, gorgeous,” he murmured, surveying her messy updo, the sleepy droop of her lips and the hint of cleavage peeking out between the sagging lapels of her robe. “Sleep well?”
“Not particularly.” She gave him no more explanation. “Hungry?”
“Sure.”
“Come on in. I fixed breakfast.”
“Coffee and waffles?”
“You hate those waffles.”
“I didn’t figure there was anything else available.”
“You forget Trent doesn’t live alone anymore. Savannah makes sure the freezer and refrigerator are well stocked. There’s bacon, eggs and toast. As well as coffee.”
“You didn’t have to go to all that trouble.”
She gave him an unreadable look before pushing away from the car. “Come get it while it’s hot.”
Kyle followed her inside, gleefully sucking in the invigorating aroma of coffee and bacon. Instead of eating at the breakfast bar, they brought their plates to the couch in Trent’s great room and sat side by side.
Twenty minutes later, Kyle set his finished plate on the coffee table and sat back with a groan. “That was fantastic,” he said, glancing her way. “Are you sure you got enough to eat?”
“I’m just starting to get my appetite back so I had plenty.” She carried their plates to the kitchen.
“Here, let me help.”
Together they rinsed the dishes and pans before loading the dishwasher. They worked in companionable silence while the morning television show updated them on the latest news. Despite her attempt to maintain her outward calm, Melody buzzed with nervous energy.
“I spent a lot of time thinking last night and I really do believe this is all just a huge overreaction.” From the rock-solid set of her jaw, she’d obviously decided to go on as if there was no threat.
Kyle was not on board with this. “Feel like heading to LA for a week or so with me?” Maybe once he got her back to LA and into his house, she’d feel inclined to stay there.
“Aren’t you supposed to be minding the store while Trent is gone?”
“Nate can take over for a little while.”
She leaned back against the counter and crossed her arms. “I suppose if I don’t you’ll be spending every night in the driveway?”
“It’s a possibility.” More likely he’d hire a security guy to watch over her.
“I think the neighbors will start to get concerned.”
