Vanessa awoke in an unfamiliar bed. Sunlight streamed through the window, warming her bare skin. The air was filled with the scent of daffodils. Mel’s favorite. Vanessa turned her head to the side. Mel lay next to her, fast asleep. She was still wearing that necklace that Vanessa gave her. She never seemed to take it off.
Vanessa smiled to herself. It was the first day of their island getaway, the holiday that Vanessa had ‘won’ for Mel at the fundraiser. They’d only just managed to squeeze it in before summer ended. Although they were only here for a few days, Vanessa had a great deal planned, most of which didn’t involve them leaving their suite.
Vanessa watched Mel’s chest rise and fall. She looked so serene. Vanessa would never get tired of watching Mel sleep. She had almost let Mel slip away. She would never make that mistake again.
Mel’s eyelids fluttered open.
