Needless to say, Sheriff Jeb had his suspicions with my strange state of bein’. But he knew me since I was a kid, and he never did more than worry and fuss that I should head on upstairs and get some rest. As for my bandit lover…
Well, he vanished. Out of the blue.
By the time I got back to tell him that officer Jeb was goin’, he was gone, and I never saw him again.
That is, until about six months later, when my belly was big and round, and his child was growin’ inside of me.
That was when he showed back up on my doorstep in the middle of the night, a crooked grin on his face as he stood there in his leather jacket. Lookin’ so damn gorgeous.
“Damn girl. You look even better pregnant,” were his first words to me. Though they weren’t the last. In the comin’ months, he hid out on my farm with me, seein’ our baby come to be born.
It wasn’t what I expected, not even a little bit, but the Lord works in mysterious ways.

I’d gone to every one of her movies, even the romantic comedy ones that made me roll my eyes, just so that I could see her again. We’d fallen out of touch over the fifteen years after graduating high school, but she’d always be my first love, my high school sweetheart. Until she moved away to pursue her acting career, and I went off to law school. We’d tried to make it work, but it all fell apart.
Now she was married to a gorgeous hunk, and I’d read on one of those slimy magazine covers that they were going to try for a baby. All the world’s eyes were on them, tabloids angling into every bit of their business.
So maybe I shouldn’t have been so bowled over when she called me and asked me to meet her in person. She was flying into New York for a shoot, and we’d still kept in touch on social media, after all.
But when she asked me to do her and her husband a favour?
And that favour involved having unprotected sex with her, to knock her up and let the world figure that it was her husband’s baby?
Well, second chances come in weird ways, and I couldn’t say no.
I did my best to not seem desperate, of course. Didn’t jump at her request – her plea – for me to knock her up right then and there. I instead said I’d think about it and that we’d meet up again that evening. Fair enough.
Of course, by the time that evening came, I was dying to blow a load in my old crush. I showed up at the hotel in a nice business suit, but ditched the tie in my car. Of course, I wanted to look more casual after leaving the office. Besides, it was her that came to me for help now. Not like the days long ago when I was salivating after her through high school, but could never impress her enough to be only mine, for good.
Since then I’d kept in shape: early morning workouts with some of the partners were not only healthy but a good networking potential. So my shoulders were broad and built, my biceps and torso filled out well. I was a catch, which is why I never settled down into a long term thing with one woman; I figured I’d use my prime years to look around, have fun.
Besides, I didn’t want some gold digger coming along and spoiling my future. But Zoe was no gold digger. She had fortunes amassed beyond compare, with mansions around the world.
The hotel she was staying at, though, wasn’t the nicest in the city. She was trying to keep a low profile for her clandestine meeting with me, no doubt. The fact that she felt she could trust me, though? Yea, I couldn’t help but be a little flattered that I’d mattered that much, even after all these years.
When she answered the door, she was dressed fairly casually in a navy dress that hugged her curves. Her skin was pale and pristine, her ruby lips so full and her eyes still wide and youthful, despite the years between when I’d first fallen for her.
She was just past 30, and yet her skin was radiant and her long, curled hair was clearly styled. She smiled as she saw me, just like she used to, with excitement and affection twinkling behind her eyes as she let me in.
“I’m so glad you decided to come back, Alex,” she said with a respectful bow of her head, all cordiality.
Of course I’d come back. Knocking up my high school crush / movie star topped my list of desires. Even if at the end of it she went home to her husband on the other side of the country.
“I can’t leave you hangin’,” I said as I stepped on into her hotel room, a smile on my face as I took it in. It certainly wasn’t the nicest, but it was far from the worst hotel room either. After a quick survey of the black and grey, modern-style furnishings, I smiled back at her.
“Funny to think of us together after all these years,” I remarked, looking her over casually. “I’m glad you thought of me when this problem came up,” I said, which was honest enough. I was glad.
Just maybe not for all the same reasons she hoped for.
