“I’m on birth control,” she said.

I hesitated. “We’re just going to have to wait for another time.”

“Max, please.”

I couldn’t say no to that. Couldn’t help myself as I lined myself up and plunged into her, rocking the desk nearly off its legs in my fury and desperation. She felt too sweet, too hot, too good, all but dripping on my important papers with every thrust. I didn’t care. Nothing mattered but pushing forward, onward — and taking her along for the ride.

I gritted my teeth and pumped once more before my orgasm crashed into me, only vaguely aware of Ruth shuddering and moaning beneath me — coming on my cock, just like I told her she would.

“Clean yourself up,” I said, nudging a box of tissues toward her as I withdrew. “We have a meeting in five minutes.”

“It’s going to be a good meeting,” Ruth said, slurring her words as she went fishing for her panties, her gorgeous ass on display.

Yes, it was.

“Max, we’ve been over this.” I propped my hand on my hip and stared him down. I didn’t so easily flinch away from those wolf blue eyes anymore — not in these past few months. Perks of the job — and being in such intimate situations with him that, when fully clothed, he simply didn’t intimidate me anymore.

Well, almost.

“I refuse to let you take a week off from work,” he growled. “Vacation time isn’t included in your internship, Ruth.”

“It’s not negotiable. It’s Thanksgiving break. I always spend it with my father. We’re all each other has.”

Maxim scoffed. “Don’t be pathetic. You think the world stops for some made-up holiday? What’s the point, even — to stuff your face with more food than you usually eat?”

“To be grateful for what you have,” I retorted, rolling my eyes. “Come on. If you had paid attention to my internship materials, you would have seen that I would not be working t

hose days. The school itself shuts down.”

“Volkov Telecom doesn’t shut down for bullshit.”

“That much is apparent.” I sighed. “Do you think me not being here is going to tank your company?”

“Don’t be fucking stupid.”

“Oh, so then you won’t miss me if I take off for a week?” I laughed at his scowl. “Stop it — I am sure your company has a generous vacation policy. People wouldn’t work here if you never gave them time off.”

“Full-time employees get four weeks of paid personal time off per year,” Maxim said. “You are not a full-time employee.”

“I don’t know what to tell you, then,” I said. “You had advance notice when I started this internship that I wasn’t going to be working over this break week. I’m reminding you again that it’s two weeks away. You have time to get over it.”

“It’s obvious that you’re not taking this internship seriously,” he said, glaring at me from his desk. “What will your advisor say when I tell her that?”

“She’ll say you’re being unreasonable because nobody is expected to be in school — or their internships — over break.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “What else you got?”

“Taking a week off for a holiday that’s supposed to be centered around gratitude is a ridiculous way to show you’re thankful for everything I’ve done for you.” He ticked off his fingers for emphasis. “The dresses, the opportunities, the condo, the perfume, the driver — you don’t care about anything. You take and take and take.”

Oh, hell, no. “Max, I didn’t ask for any of that. You gave it to me. And even when I told you it was too much, that I didn’t want it, you insisted on continuing to give me things. That’s on you.”

“So you want me to take it all back.”

“Are we really doing this?” I asked, feeling sick to my stomach and more emotional than I should have. “I’ve always been afraid that you gave me all these things just so you could dangle them over my head and make me do whatever you want. You want to kick Becca and me out of the place you gave us to live? Fine. Screw you.”

I was weeping before I even knew what was happening, and suddenly Maxim’s arms were around me.
