“I know, baby, and I’m sorry.” I really was sorry. I hadn’t been thinking clearly at all. How could I live with this sin for the rest of my life, when it hadn’t even been a day and it was killing me?
“So, what were you doing?”
For a minute there, my mind registered Kamar saying, So, who were you fucking? I flipped the script on him and questioned him.
“Kamar, what’s with all the questions?”
That’s when he suspected something was up. “I see.”
“You see? You see what?”
“I know what this is all about, Maxxine. You’re still unhappy with me.”
“What are you talking about?”
Clearly I didn’t know where he was going with this one. I’m still unhappy with him—huh! I was happy with Kamar. I loved my baby with everything I had.
“I’m talking about my work hours.” Kamar took my manicured hand into his and kissed each knuckle slowly one at a time.
“You know how I feel about that.”
“Yes, I know. I haven’t been committed to you like I’m supposed to be.”
“What do you mean?”
“Over the past seventeen months all of my attention and focus have been on these projects at work.”
“Kamar, I completely understand. You have a business to run. I get it.”
“You’re right about that, but I have a gorgeous wife that I’ve been neglecting emotionally and physically.”
Kamar reached over and caressed my shoulder and neck. “I should have paid more attention to you and I will.”
“We’ve had this talk before, more than once,” I said sternly.
“I’m sorry, but you’ll see. I have a surprise for you.” Kamar smiled at me and got my full attention. I positioned my body to face him.
“Oh, really?”
“Yes.”
I was curious. “What is it, baby?”
“All I can tell you is that I’ll be home this Friday around four thirty.”
“What happens at four thirty on Friday?”
“It’s your surprise; a surprise that’s well overdue.”
Now I was suspicious. I wanted to know what the big secret was. I couldn’t
wait until Friday to find out. Several scenarios crossed my mind. One of them was having a baby. Kamar couldn’t be asking me to have a baby. He didn’t have time for even me, but then again, I could have been wrong. I put my work on the coffee table and began tickling Kamar, trying to force my surprise out of him.
“Tell me now, baby! I can’t wait until Friday.”
Kamar continued to laugh hysterically. I always loved the way he laughed. It made my whole heart smile. Kamar stopped me from tickling him. He grabbed my wrists and forced himself on top of me in a playful manner. I looked into his beautiful eyes and smiled at him.
“You know that I don’t like to be tickled.”
