“Can you find the bacon, honey? I looked, but didn’t see it right away,” I said as I measured out the water for the pancakes.

“They don’t have any,” Elena said, causing me to turn my head and narrow my eyes at her.

“What do you mean?” I asked, because clearly, everyone had bacon.

“They have spam, not bacon.”

“But … wouldn’t they have spam and bacon?” I asked hopefully.

Elena shook her head, dashing my hopes.

“No, I asked the other day when I was helping Tutu, and she said they don’t usually eat bacon, at least not for breakfast; they eat spam.”

I shook my head, not knowing how to respond to the madness that was coming out of Lena’s mouth.

“Okay,” I said with a half shrug. “Get the spam.”

I turned on the griddle to preheat for the pancakes, then went back to coat the egg pan with butter and added the eggs. When Elena put the can of spam on the counter, I handed her the spatula to scramble the eggs, then went to work on the pancakes and spam.

By the time Elin shuffled in the room, with Mama and Pops trailing in soon after, the hash browns, pancakes, and eggs were done and I was pan frying the spam.

“What’s all this?” Cade’s mom asked, coming over to drop a kiss on my cheek.

“Breakfast for Alani’s big day,” I replied as I flipped the spam. “She hasn’t come out yet. Neither has Cade. They must be sleeping in a bit.”

“Alani is in the shower,” she said, then smiled and gave me a wink. “Cade’s still asleep though, seems you wore him out.”

She turned to greet Elena and Elin, leaving me gaping at the spam like a stuck fish.

Oh my god, she heard us ... I was going to kill Cade.

Once everything was done, and everyone had plated up their food and sat at the table, I excused myself and slammed into Cade’s room.

“What the?” he grumbled when I woke him up by throwing myself on his back.

“Your mother heard us last night,” I seethed, reaching under the covers to pinch him.

“Ow, shit,” he said, pushing away from me. “Stop it.”

“You said no one would hear anything…”

“She didn’t hear anything,” Cade assured me. “She’s fucking with you.”

“No, why would she do that?” I asked.

“Probably because she knew she’d get this reaction,” he said with a chuckle. “What’d you do, run screaming from the room?”

I didn’t respond, because that’s kind of what I’d done.

“Relax, darlin’, she loves you. She teases you because you’re pretty fun to tease, and she thinks you know it’s coming from a good place. She doesn’t mean anything by it.”

“Are you sure she doesn’t think I’m a loose woman corrupting her son?” I pouted.

Cade threw his head back and laughed.

“Babe, my mother came to terms a long time ago with the fact that I was born corrupted.”

“Hmmm,” I said, then pushed myself off the bed. “I made breakfast.”
