The silly grin from earlier returned. Unexpectedly, he turned me around again before lifting me up on the counter.
“I think you need something more... substantial than a neck massage to relax.”
“Another vacation?”
He laughed. “Not what I had in mind, but that works too. I’m really a bad influence.”
“And you’re good at organizing vacations.”
“Whatever my lovely wife requests.”
“You’re being sweet. All prior evidence shows you do this when you want to bribe me into something or butter me up.”
“Not at all.”
“Hunter... is there something you want to tell me?”
“Is it too early to talk about kids?”
“Ours?”
“No, the neighbors’. Of course, ours.”
“What about them?”
“I know that you want two.”
Wow. How did he remember? And now that he’d planted the idea in my mind, my imagination ran away with it. All those muscles, the crystal blue eyes. He had some excellent genes to pass on.
I loved kids. Since I’d been a little girl, I’d wanted little girls of my own—braiding their hair, tucking them in at night. But for the first time, this felt more than just a dream. It felt real.
I laced my arms around his neck, shifting closer to the edge of the counter. Closer to him.
“You never said you wanted kids before.”
“It wasn’t something I consciously thought about. But with you... I want them. Two girls, or boys, I’m not picky. Before... I wasn’t sure I could be a good father. I’ve spent so much of my life just focused on getting to the next step, giving it my best shot, that I didn’t know if I was capable of anything more. But you did say I’m a good husband.”
I grinned. “And I meant every word. Cross my heart.”
“I can also learn to be a good father.”
I nodded, too overwhelmed to say anything.
“When do you want to start trying?”
“Hunter, you do remember I said I want to make partner first, right?”
“Yes. But given all statistics, it can take time. Never hurts to start early. I like to go the extra mile.”
That grin on his face... damn. I loved that I’d put it there. That I could make him light up like this.
I laughed as he bit the shell of my ear gently. “First, we need to talk about that celebratory vacation. Whisk me away. I don’t even want to know where we’re going.”
He pulled back abruptly. “You’re giving me permission to surprise you?”
“Yes.”
“Half the fun is you giving me shit about it.”
