The Reign of Rain Robinson - Page 175

“Marita!” Kirk switched on the light. “I could have killed you!”

Bautista smiled and put her hands up slowly. “Sorrrryyyy.”

Kirk shook his head. “What the fuck are you doing here?”

Bautista tried to put her arms around him, but she stumbled. “Ooops,” she giggled.

“You’re drunk,” Kirk said and stepped back a little. If there was one thing that he couldn’t stand, it was a drunk woman. “How did you get in here?”

Bautista held up the key she had made. “What kind of cop would I be, if I didn’t have a key?” she said, waving it in front of him. He snatched it out of her hand.

“You need to leave,” he said and opened the door.

Bautista closed it. “No, I need to get fucked hard and put to sleep wet.” She tried to put her arms around him again, but Kirk grabbed her arms and slowly lowered them.

“No, you need to leave,” he said calmly.

Bautista jerked her arms away. “You don’t want me!” she shouted.

“Not like this.”

Bautista pushed her way past him. “You probably got that bitch in your bed!” she shouted and headed for the bedroom only to find the bed empty. Bautista froze.

Dawkins isn’t here, and he still doesn’t want me, she thought and that made her furious and it was on from there. For the next hour, the detectives yelled and aired out all the issues that one had with the other, both personally and professionally. And as it turned out, each had a lot of issues with the other. The situation with Dawkins had just brought them all to the surface.

It ended with Bautista shouting; “Fuck you and that bitch!” and slamming the door behind her. So needless to say, Bautista wasn’t speaking to Kirk, so she wasn’t at all happy to see them, and Dawkins waving like that only made it worse.

“You wanted to see us, lieutenant?” Kirk asked when he and Dawkins went into the office.

“You’ve been summoned,” Sanchez said.

“Downtown?” Kirk asked.

“No.” Sanchez leaned back in his chair. “Rain Robinson called and said, and I quote, tell Kirk I need to see him today. He know what’s up.” So, even though they were most appreciative of the tip, the detectives didn’t like being summoned.

“You wanna hear what I got, or you want me to just handle this mutha fucka for you?” Rain asked.

“Tell me what you got,” Kirk said, and Rain told them the information that she had gotten. “Thanks,” he said and stood up. “This cost you much?”

Rain shook her head. “A little rock buys a whole lot of information in some circles.”

“It most certainly does. Thank you again, Rain,” Dawkins said.

“You’re welcome.” Rain looked at Kirk. “I like her, Kirk. Glad you got rid of the last one.”

Kirk looked at Dawkins. “Yeah, me too,” he said, and they left J.R.’s.

The flirtation between the two detectives had been going on since they partnered up, and that day was no exception. It was sometimes mixed with a hint of sarcasm, other times it was under the cover of the investigation. At times, it was discreetly veiled comments, and at others, it was plain to understand what the other meant.

He was saying, I want you.

She was saying, you can have me.

That morning, Dawkins was looking very sexy in a blue St. John Milano blazer and pique knit sheath dress from the Caviar Collection that hugged her hips that she wore with Gianvito Rossi ankle-strap sandals. They had just finished following up on a lead that Dawkins had gotten from one of her old gang informants that turned out to be nothing, when a call came over the radio about a drug store robbery that was in progress.

“We’re close,” Dawkins said excitedly.

“You wanna go?”
