The Reign of Rain Robinson - Page 178

Kirk laughed.

“After I graduated college, I applied for every job I could. They called me first.”

“And you needed a job.”

“And nobody else was calling,” she giggled. “So, I took the job and here I am, a decorated detective.”

As it began to get late, the topic of discussion turned from police work to food and the fact that neither of them had eaten since they had coffee and donuts that morning. Kirk got out and stayed out of sight, while Dawkins went to get them something to eat. When she came back, she had burgers, fries and a box of coffee.

“They say it keeps it hot for hours, and we might be here a while,” Dawkins told Kirk when he got in the passenger seat.

And as Dawkins predicted, they were there a while, so they talked and eventually their conversation got around to the day that they spent together.

You know, how funny their exchange with Rain was:

You wanna hear what I got, or you want me to just handle this mutha fucka for you?

The robbery, the shootout, and Dawkins saying:

This last one is mine.

And naturally, that eventually led to them talking about what happened next and how good it was.

Oh yeah, this is gonna be good.

And that led them to the conversation that neither Kirk nor Dawkins wanted to really have, but they both knew they had to, and since they were sort of on the subject and had plenty of time …

“What’s up with you and Bautista?”

“She’s not speaking to me,” Kirk said simply and hoped that would end it but knowing that it wouldn’t.

“I saw that quite clearly. And still I ask, what’s up with that, detective?” Dawkins asked and since he had plenty of time, Kirk told her about the fight they had.

“It ended with her saying fuck you,” Kirk said, deciding that it was best to leave out the and that bitch part for obvious reasons, “and slamming the door on her way out.”

“Okay,” Dawkins said, and even though she had a bunch more questions the she wanted to ask, she kept them to herself. Knowing that she would get back to them in a more appropriate setting, she slowly eased back into talking about how good it was between them. The flirtatious, and at times, explicit conversation had Dawkins wet and wanting him and that was when she noticed his dick print and began thinking …

How unprofessional would it be?

And was about to pull up her skirt when she saw the car lights in her side mirror. “Car’s coming,” she said.

“What were you getting ready to do?” Kirk asked as the car passed where they were parked.

“They’re slowing down.”

“Yeah, I see that, but what were you getting ready to do?”

“They’re stopping in front of the house,” Dawkins said and glanced at Kirk. “Something unprofessional,” she said, before returning her focus to the car. “Think that’s our guy?”

“He’s getting out,” Kirk replied, and glanced at Dawkins thinking that he would have been down to be unprofessional right along with her. “And he’s looking around.”

“That’s our guy.”

“Patience.”

They sat impatiently as the man walked slowly around to the back of the car. He looked around again and then he opened the trunk. After looking around one more time, he bent over and leaned in.

“Is that a body?” Dawkins asked.
