“I don’t know,” Travis said. “You’ll just know,” he said and moved out.
When Jackie figured that he had enough time to get set, she tossed the grenade in the living room. Her and Travis covered their eyes as the sudden flash of light and loud noise distracted the men. Before they could react, Jackie opened fire. She hit two of them with shots to their chests and then one apiece to the head.
The other two men turned away from the shooting and tried to leave the living room the way they came in, but Travis was there waiting. He hit the first man that came toward him with multiple shots to the head and chest. Then he turned to the second man, fired two more shots and hit him in the back as he ran.
Chapter Twenty
> “She’s gonna use him to get to me!” Rain said.
“Guess that means we’re dismissed,” Carter said as she went in her office and slammed the door earlier that same evening.
“Guess so. I’m tired, so I’ll get with you tomorrow,” Jackie said before she left J.R.'s., leaving Carter standing in front of Yarissa’s desk. He stood there for a while looking at her.
“I’ll be in my office,” he finally said and walked away.
It was a thinly veiled invitation for her to join him in the office to fuck. A half hour later when Yarissa hadn’t shown, Carter assumed that she either didn’t catch the hint or she didn’t want to fuck. Either way, he was tired, and he was going home.
When he came out of the office, Carter could hear voices and then laughter. As he got closer, he could tell that the voice belonged to Rain, and Yarissa was the one who was laughing. And for Carter, that explained why she didn’t accept his invitation.
Yarissa always wants to fuck, Carter laughed and rounded the corner, but the first person he saw was Mileena. Although he had been in and out of J.R.'s damn near every day, this was the first time that he had seen her in a while.
J.R.'s was her house.
Carter may be a captain in The Family, but the people that worked at J.R.'s, they were her people. She was their captain and they were loyal to her. Especially her security team. Therefore, any time Carter set foot in the club, Mileena knew about it and she knew exactly where he was at all times.
Like all their properties, every inch of J.R.'s was covered by cameras. Those cameras were manned by Latresia Alison. Anytime Carter got too close to her, she was in her ear to let Mileena know how many feet away Carter was.
So, Mileena knew that if she went up there that there was a chance she’d see him. She called Yarissa and she said that Carter was in his office. But she needed to talk to Rain about a situation that had occurred in the gambling room, so up she went.
Carter stood there looking at Mileena in the tight black jeans, heels and the J.R.'s T-shirt she was wearing.
And yeah, she was wearing the shit out of it.
“Hello, Mileena.”
She looked at Carter for what seemed like a long time … but actually wasn’t. And then Mileena walked off without speaking.
Rain laughed and went back in her office. Carter looked at Yarissa.
“Sorry,” he said and went after Mileena.
He ran down the stairs and caught her just as she was about to go back into the club.
“Mileena … Mileena, wait!”
Mileena stopped, turned around, folded her arms across her chest and waited for him to get there. When Carter got to her, she just looked at him. She didn’t want to admit it to herself and definitely not to him, but she missed Carter, and she wanted him. But since she knew that a relationship with Carter would only cause her more hurt and pain, Mileena exhaled and said nothing.
“You could at least say hello.”
“Hello, Carter,” she said, turned and went out in the club.
“Fuck!”
He understood plainly that he had fucked up with Mileena. It may not have been entirely his fault, but that was where he found himself. But he knew that was the lie that men tell themselves when they fuck up and basically force women to leave them. The truth was he should have never tried to get back together with her. He knew that he could never be the kind of man that Mileena wanted or needed in her life.
He couldn’t, it just wasn’t in him. And now he had made matters worse. It was bad enough that he was fucking Fantasy and Glenda, but if Mileena knew what he was doing with Yarissa, she would be crushed. At times he wondered why, other than the obvious, Yarissa is fine, and I’ve wanted to fuck her for years, why was he fucking her. He would examine the reasoning behind that some other time.
Now he had a decision to make. Carter had to decide whether he was going to let it go, because he was the only one that had the power to either end it, or make it work for her and run the risk of continuing to hurt her.
