I look at him. Not him, too.

“You know I’m not going to kill her,” I say to him. “I’ve already told Orso she isn’t a threat.”

“So you’re dumping her? You fucked her and now you’re tossing her aside? That’s cold.”

It is cold when he puts it like that. But it’s the truth.

“I don’t care,” I say.

I’ve always been cold. That’s who I am. A cold-blooded killer.

Andrea shrugs. “Right. There’s nothing in your code against breaking women’s hearts.”

“You toss women aside all the time,” I remind him. “And men.”

“Because I get laid whenever I can. Just to be clear, though, I tell them beforehand that it’s just sex. And I don’t toss them aside after. I kiss them goodbye. Is that what you did?”

No. It doesn’t matter, though. Allie isn’t my concern anymore.

“I’m going after Antonio’s killer,” I insist.

“As you should,” Andrea says. He places a hand on my arm. “But maybe you should finish this job first.”

I resist the urge to roll my eyes. Frankly, this argument is getting exhausting.

“After all, there’s a reason why Orso gave it to you,” Andrea adds.

I look at him because I sense a meaning behind his words.

“You mean other than the fact that Orso is scared that an FBI agent will destroy what he’s leaving behind?” I ask him.

“Do you really think that’s why he asked you to kill her? Because she’s FBI?”

My eyebrows furrow. Well, that’s what Orso said. Is Andrea saying he lied?

Andrea pulls my arm and leads me to the end of the hall.

“I found out something,” he says. “The reason why Orso and Sergio Bianchi turned from brothers to enemies.”

“What?” I ask curiously.

“A woman. Sergio had some… fun with a woman Orso was sleeping with and ended up killing her. After he did, he tried to escape with his daughter, go on the run, but Orso caught him. Sergio wasn’t able to escape with his daughter. He was barely able to escape with his life.”

“Daughter?” I give him a puzzled look. “I thought Sergio had a son, not a daughter.”

“He had a son, but he had a daughter, too,” Andrea says. “Or should I say he has a daughter?”

My gaze narrows. “Are you saying Alyssa Chandler is Sergio’s daughter?”

Andrea nods.

I remember Allie’s story about being kidnapped. Was that when Sergio tried to escape with her?

“When Alyssa Chandler was a child, she had a little accident on a yacht and needed blood,” Andrea says. “None of her brothers or parents were a match.”

Okay. There could be another explanation for that, though.

“And someone who used to work at the Chandler mansion swears that Suzette Chandler was only pregnant three times.”

So Allie is adopted? Is that why her mother doesn’t like her? Her brothers love her, though. Do they know?

I have so many questions.

I ask Andrea one. “If Allie… Alyssa Chandler is Sergio Bianchi’s daughter, why was he trying to kill her?”

“Are you sure the killer was sent by Sergio Bianchi?” Andrea replies with his own question.

Come to think of it, no. It’s just a suspicion I’ve shared with Allie. And Andrea. He suggested it, and he’s been giving me leads on where to find him.

Have we all been chasing the wrong guy all this time?

“Fine,” I say. “Let’s say she’s Sergio Bianchi’s daughter. Even if she is, why would Orso want her dead? He doesn’t get family involved, remember?”

Andrea shrugs. “Maybe she has some information about the family that she’s not even aware she has.”

Like a key to a safety deposit box in Switzerland hidden in her belongings? Possible. If so, that would explain why Orso’s convinced she’s a threat.

“Or maybe Papa Bear is just willing to make an exception,” Andrea suggests. “After all, Sergio did take one of his sons.”

True. And Antonio was completely innocent.

I was wondering why Orso hasn’t sent me after Sergio, but maybe this is his revenge instead. And maybe he’s insistent I finish the job because it is for Antonio’s sake, because he’s giving me a chance to exact my own revenge.

Can I do it? Am I willing to make an exception, too, and kill Allie?

Right now, I don’t know. All I know is this – I can’t just leave her.

Chapter Thirteen

Allie

I can’t believe Cain just left me.

When I got back to the library – and I changed faster than I ever have in my life – he was gone. I searched the whole house for him but didn’t find him. I came back here to the hotel, thinking he’d gone ahead, but he wasn’t here either. Until now, he hasn’t showed up.

Where is he? And why did he leave? Was it because of what Grae said?

I shake my head. No. There’s no way Cain would be scared of Grae.

Why, then? Why did he disappear right after he said those nice things to me and we had such amazing sex? It doesn’t make sense.
