Dragon's Omega Bride (Shifter Marriage Service 3)
“Thank you for keeping me from hitting the floor.”
“I wouldn’t let anything happen to you. Ever.”
There was a moment, when their eyes locked and she forgot all about her admonishments to herself about not getting any more attached to him. It ended just as quickly as it had happened.
“I’m starving,”
“Let’s get you and those spawn of ours fed,” he replied, holding onto her elbow.
Making their way out the door, they were surprised to find themselves looking at Kevin, who was flanked by both of the guards on the grounds.
“What’s going on here?” Yakov demanded.
“That’s what we were just trying to find out. He says he is here to see you, but wouldn’t say why,” one of them replied.
“What do you want, Kevin?” Yakov said, addressed him directly.
“I came to talk to you about your recent appointment. It seems we have some things to discuss.”
“Like what?”
“Your sham marriage and fake babies for starters.”
Aileen tried to act unbothered by the accusation, which was only half right anyway.
“Kevin, I don’t have time for your games. I have a marriage license and a doctor’s visit that say otherwise and that is all that you need to know.”
“I’m not buying it. You’re dating no one and then suddenly you come up with this broad from a different clan, get married over a weekend unexpectedly and announce she’s pregnant? The outgoing leader and dimwitted members of this clan might buy that shit, but I don’t fucking believe a word of it.”
“You’ll do well not to insult my wife and use that kind of language in front of her,” Yakov replied, his tone low and threatening.
“Or what? You want to shift and come to an agreement the old-fashioned way?”
“Remember who you are talking to, Kevin. I am now the leader of this clan and you’d be wise not to challenge me. At best, you’ll limp away from here with severe injuries. At worst, you’ll be banished on top of the beat down I give you for crossing me. Of course, I could kill you and walk away untouched by law. You, on the other hand, would be put on trial by the council and be banished or put to death perhaps. I hold the cards and you’d do well to remember that.”
“You think you are something else, don’t you? You always did. Just because your family was once ruling class, doesn’t mean you should be now. I’m going to find what I need to ruin you and then it will be you who is put on trial and banished. As for your wife, who knows what might happen to a tarnished woman of another clan.”
Yakov took a step forward and Kevin flinched and then tried to cover it up by laughing and waving him off.
“It’s all good, Yakov. You can expect my next trip to be more interesting for both of us.”
“Good luck,” Yakov replied.
He watched Kevin get into his car and drive away.
“How did he get through the gates?” Yakov asked the guards.
“We don’t know yet.”
“Find out and fix it. Also, double the patrol numbers. I want every corner of this place covered. I’m not worried about myself. I can handle that little cockroach, but if he gets near my pregnant wife while I’m not at home, you will all have more than you care to address to answer for.”
“Yes sir,” they replied, almost in unison.
“Are you okay?” he asked, turning to Aileen.
She was sure that she was quite pale, all the color having felt like it had drained from her face.
“I’m fine. That was just a little more than I expected on my trip to the car.”
“For both of us. Still up for dinner out?”
“It’ll take more than the likes of him to get between me and food with these hungry creatures I have on board demanding meat.”
“That’s my boys . . . Or maybe girls. Hopefully, some of each.”
“Let’s go feed them and see what they turn into.”
“Let’s.”CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVENDinner had brought more discussions about Kevin’s visit, debating what his visit could possibly mean.
“Do you think he really knows anything?”
“No. I’m sure he doesn’t. The agency is very secure.”
“I heard they had an incident where a man broke in and got information on his ex.”
“Yes, but they changed practices since then. I went through all their security protocols with them. They left nothing to chance.”
“So, you think he is just guessing then?”
“That is exactly what I think.”
“Do you think he’ll come back again?”
“Not if he has any sense at all. He’s just upset. He’s been stewing a few days about it and it got the best of him. He acted out, but he’s been set right now.”
“If you really believe that, why did you double the security patrols?”
“Because I leave nothing to chance. Even though I believe he will not return, I am prepared for any stupidity that might befall his better judgment.”
