The Best of Us (Love in Isolation 2)
"Everything has been perfect," Piper says. "Look at you two. Gah, I can't wait to find love like this."
Kendall snorts. "It wasn't butterflies and rainbows, but it was worth it."
A man dressed in black stands behind Piper, watching her. "Who's that?" I ask.
"Oh him? It's my bodyguard, Tristan.”
"She's kinda a big deal," Kendall tells me with a laugh. "My famous sister."
"Famous? Pfft. Before I forget, I think we should have a celebration shot! What would you two like?" She quickly changes the subject, but I don’t think Kendall notices.
"Anything," Kendall tells her.
"Surprise us," I say.
Piper shakes her head, wearing a sneaky grin. "Shoulda never told me that. I'll be right back."
She walks away, and Kendall turns to me. "I can’t believe she still has a personal bodyguard. It’s been six months. I’m kinda surprised she brought him to the wedding since we already have security here. Do you think there’s something to worry about?" Kendall seems concerned about this, so I try to ease her worry.
I place my hands on her back and graze my hand across her soft skin. "I'm sure it's nothing. Your parents are protective of you both. There’s a lot of security here. Did you see them all?"
"Kinda,” she says, glancing toward the door. At every entrance stands a man dressed in black. This place is guarded like the White House. Before I can say anything else, Piper returns with our shots.
“So when are we cutting the cake? That thing is gigantic. I don't think I've ever seen one that tall before. It has lights, Kendall. I mean I saw the picture you texted me, but it literally didn’t do it any justice. I'm surprised it's not surrounded by a moat of champagne." She snickers.
“That would've been a good idea, though,” Kendall says as Piper hands us the glasses. “I almost thought about getting one with diamonds and gold, but Ryan would’ve lost his shit on me.”
“We don’t need to eat a multimillion-dollar cake. It all comes out the same, if you know what I mean.”
Piper laughs, and Kendall playfully rolls her eyes. The cake was still expensive, but nothing like what it could’ve been, and I know it’ll still taste amazing.
"What is this?" I smell the shot, and it’s scented like rubbing alcohol and cranberry juice.
"It's called Death by Sex," she barely gets out before laughing. "’Cause I'm sure that will be you two later tonight."
“God, I hope so,” Kendall tells her, biting her lip when she looks at me.
Piper holds up her glass. "To the happy couple! So excited you're finally getting your happily ever afters."
We shoot them down, and I’m shocked it doesn’t burn.
"That was really good," Kendall exclaims.
"So when are we finally cutting that giant-ass cake?" Piper asks again, and Kendall explains the itinerary. I glance at her bodyguard again and notice he's speaking into an earpiece. He grits his teeth, then meets my eyes. I give him a head nod, but he's all business. The man actually looks like he could break bones with his bare hands.
After a few minutes, Kendall and I are interrupted by family, then Piper excuses herself. I watch as she meets up with Tristan, and they make their way through the crowd. He moves closer to her, guiding her around people, constantly scanning the crowd.
Once she’s out of sight, and we're finally alone, I pull Kendall close and kiss the hell out of her. My entire body is on fire, and I need her more than I need air. The anticipation of tonight is almost too much to handle, but I know it’ll be worth it.
"Looking forward to peeling this dress off your body later," I whisper in her ear.
"Can't wait for you to see what I'm wearing underneath."
I lift an eyebrow and bite my lip. “Fuck, you’re such a tease.” But I love it.
Stephanie comes over and tells us it's time to cut the cake, and Kendall nearly jumps out of her skin with excitement.
We're escorted over to that area, and it's the first time I've gotten a good look at the sugary masterpiece. The photographer snaps pictures of us standing beside it, and I almost feel guilty cutting into it.
We're placed in poses with the knife, and soon, we're placing slices in each other's mouths. Kendall makes sure to suck all the icing off my finger, and I swear to god, she did that shit on purpose. The smirk on her face gives her away. As I watch her laugh, I wonder how I got so damn lucky.KendallSince I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed about my wedding day. The ceremony and reception have exceeded my expectations. Ryan has too. Before my father escorted me out, my mother delivered a pair of diamond earrings that Ryan had made from my grandmother's jewelry. I cried and thankfully Piper and Cami were there to catch my tears with tissues before I ruined my makeup.
