A Love to Discover (Loving in the Highlands 2)

« Prev  Chapter  Next »

As there is nothing interesting in the barn and the pantry, we return to the castle, only to find out that we have been together for three whole hours, and now Sloan wants to spend time with his friend.

'Yes, of course,' I reply, when Sloan asks if he can take my new friend away for a while. Great – I will have some time to have a chat with Megan. I am sure she wants to know what is going on between me and Calem.

Chapter 5

Elsie

Megan appears by my side as soon as Calem is gone. She looks at me with excited eyes and motions for me to go to my bedroom. I nod and we walk past Forba and Anabel who go into the kitchen to start making the dinner.

'Elsie, what is going on between you two?' Megan cannot wait until we reach my bedroom.

'I think that he likes me a lot, and I also like him,' I say, as walk quickly down the semi-dark empty corridors. 'But it does not mean anything, you know, Meg,' I add. 'He is leaving tomorrow.'

'I know,' she replies. I open the door of my bedroom, and we enter.

'He came and waited for me in the morning right behind my bedroom door,' I say, chuckling. 'He said that Sloan had told him where my bedroom was.'

'Well, I was also speaking with Sloan about Calem,' Megan says. 'Sloan is of a very good opinion about him. He trusts Calem, and that is why he told him where your bedroom was.'

'I and Calem have spent these two days together,' I say. 'It is really interesting to be with him. He is strong, gentle, handsome, and clever. I do not love him, but I feel a sense of security when he is by my side. Today, when I stumbled, his reaction was so fast - he grabbed me and kept me from falling.'

'It is so romantic, too bad that he will go tomorrow,' Megan nods. 'Though, who knows, maybe he will come back again? Maybe you will spend time together and get to know each other, and then eventually he will come after you?'

'I have no idea,' I shrug. Deep inside my mind I wish Megan was right. It would be so nice that he came back for me.

'I have promised to show him the tower today in the evening,' I say. 'We do not have much time, so I think I will show him the tower, and then the day will end. At least, both of us will have what to remember.'

'It is getting late,' Megan says, looking out of the window. The sun is slowly turning to the horizon. 'It is almost dinnertime. We had better go and help Forba in the kitchen, so that the dinner will be ready.'

I do not have much time to spend with Calem. Like everything else in this life, those days spent with Calem are also coming to an end. I get up and follow Megan out of my bedroom and down the corridor towards the kitchen. I will help Forba with dinner today, if she has not finished preparing it already. I want Calem to be surprised of my cooking abilities.

Fortunately, Forba and Anabel have not finished preparing the dinner yet. There are several things that still need to be done. I am happy to help them, keeping in my mind all the time that Calem will eat what I cook right now. I want to see the smile on his handsome face when he learns that I have helped the maids in the kitchen. He will certainly be proud of me. I remember the time when Sloan was proud of Megan when he learned that she had helped the maids in the kitchen.

I shake my head. What am I thinking about? Why am I comparing Calem and me to Sloan and Megan? They got married in the end. It has nothing to do with Calem and me.

Megan works silently, probably thinking about pleasing Sloan with the delicious dinner.

At last we finish the preparations and go into the dining-room, letting Forba and Anabel lay the table themselves.

Sloan and Calem are already in the dining-room, talking. The moment Calem sees me, he gets up and comes towards me.

'This is our last dinner together,' he says, 'let's sit together.'

'Of course,' I say, as we sit next to each other. 'You know, Calem, today I helped the maids with the dinner. I hope that you will like it.'

His face lights up. 'Are you serious? I would love to try something that you have cooked. I am already sure that it is delicious.'

'Do not be so sure,' I say, smiling slyly. I look at him and wonder how emotions can change a fierce and scary-looking warrior into a gentle creature who is soft and kind. I am amazed at what love can do to people.
