Tempting Perfection
He droned on, “I need to go, but I’ll expect the reports in my inbox within the hour.”
After finishing his call, Garrick joined us.
“Hey, Mr. Moneypants. Making your next fortune?”
“Something like that.” He shook his head and smiled at me.
Knoah bounced a little more. “Come. Come. Let’s eat.”
There seemed to be some changes in Garrick, as well. A huge smile spread across his face. Something was up.
Kurt raised his eyebrow at me. He was obviously picking up the vibe with Knoah and Garrick. We all took our seat at the table. Two places were set with a small plate covered by a silver dome.
“Go ahead.” Knoah motioned for us to take the covers off.
Slowly we pulled them off, unsure where this was going. On the plate was a picture of Knoah’s feet in the gorgeous black, high-heeled shoes I loved, Garrick’s feet wearing his boring-ass business shoes, and a pair of empty baby shoes with a December date written underneath them.
I gasped. “Does this…Are you—”
They both beamed, and Knoah nodded. “We’re fourteen weeks pregnant.”
I nearly knocked over the chair getting to her. “Knoah! This is amazing. Congratulations!” I hugged her. This was the furthest she’d ever been in a pregnancy. A sheer miracle. Pulling back, I saw the joy on her face. “You deserve this. All this and more.”
Garrick and Kurt shook hands in that manly we don’t hug way. Whatever. Then Kurt picked up Knoah and spun her around. “I’m so happy for you, squirt. Now we’re going to have a squirtette.”
She laughed. “Yes, I guess we will.”
Next, I hugged Garrick. “Congratulations, daddy.”
“Thank you, Sawyer.”
There were so many things to be excited about. So many new adventures opening for the four of us. I couldn’t contain them. “Our babies are going to be close in age. What if you have a little girl. Then Dylan and her will fall in love and give us grandbabies.”
Garrick intervened.
“Let’s slow down. I think I’d like to enjoy my child before you marry her off.”
Her? He had to know. Garrick never guessed. He was exact. Always.
“Wait. Do you know what you’re having?” By the looks on their faces, they totally knew. I threw my hands in the air and screamed, “Oh my gosh! A little girl.” Then I grabbed my stomach. “Dylan, I already have your wife picked out for you.”
Knoah grabbed my shoulders. “You can’t say a word. We haven’t told anyone. But, yes, it’s a girl.”
“Of course.” In a singsong voice, I said, “Oh! Oh! Oh! This is so exciting. Dylan will be able to protect little baby girl Shaw if some mean boy tries to push her around at the playground.” I flapped my hands. “Oh, I can see it now. Vacations together. Playdates. Going to those Mommy and Me classes.”
Knoah was jumping with me. Well, Knoah was jumping. I really couldn’t jump anymore due to my size. Kurt and Garrick watched us in shock. I put my hand on Knoah’s shoulder. “Oh, if you keep jumping, Kurt’s going to start talking about jiggling the baby too much.”
“I’ve been trying to tell her that.” Garrick held his hand out as if to say, “Duh.” It was the most adorable sight ever.
I busted out laughing.
Kurt looked at me. “See, I’m not weird. No jiggling the baby.”
In a pretend whisper, I held my hand up and said, “They seem to forget about the whole jiggling thing during woohoo, if you get my drift.”
“Oh, I totally get your drift.”
Kurt shook his head. “So…subject change?”
