Tempting Perfection
As he sat down again, I waited for him to start. “Your parents are here. The doctor was worried we might have to make some important medical decisions about your health. I had to get an injunction to make sure they weren’t in control.”
The beeping of the heart monitor increased a little, and I worked on taking a few calming breaths. “They’re here?”
“Last update I got, they were sitting in one of the waiting rooms. They aren’t allowed back here.”
My mouth grew a little dry. “Were they involved?”
“They have an alibi, but I believe they were. Adriane snuck out of West Cedar disguised as a nurse who looked like her. Your parents flew her down. So, your parents may not have pulled the trigger, but they enabled the situation.”
“Adriane. She’s locked up?”
“Yes. And the lawyers are making sure she doesn’t get out. The police are issuing a warrant to search West Cedar. We have a team on the ground there to offer help if they’ll take it.”
A shiver went through me. At least we had that going for us. “Do I need to talk to my parents? To help the situation?”
“Honestly, I haven’t gotten very far on what needs to be done. Steve is the lead. Garrick is overseeing what they’re doing. You and Dylan were my priority.”
Why would my parents show up? I didn’t want them anywhere near my baby. Ever. “Whatever they need me to do, I will as long as it doesn’t involve Dylan.”
“Let’s focus on us right now. Tomorrow we’ll talk to Steve.”
“Okay.”
The nurse came back in. “Oh, he’s done well. Let’s work on pumping so you stay in sync with him.”
“Perfect.”
Chapter Fifty
Kurt
It was getting late, and I was still in Sawyer’s hospital room with her and Dylan. Mom, Knoah, Garrick, and guys from the band had been visiting us in small groups all day since Sawyer had given the okay after pumping. I was tired; Sawyer had to be exhausted. I sat in my chair, watching Sawyer coo over our son as Knoah held him. Motherhood looked beautiful on her. She hid the pain from her surgeries well, but I could tell it was wearing on her.
About an hour before, we’d gotten word Dustin had come through surgery and was in recovery. No one had been killed. Adriane had been denied bail. Now, I needed to get my family home as soon as possible. It would probably be at least three days.
Knoah placed Dylan in Sawyer’s good arm. “We’re going to let you rest. Want me to stop by the vet and check on George?”
Sawyer looked a little worried. “Please. Would you take his blanket and stuffed monkey? Maybe one of our pillowcases. I don’t want him to think he’s been abandoned.”
Smoothing Dylan’s head one last time, Knoah said, “Of course. He’ll be the best-taken-care-of doggie there is. I talked to Garrick, and we’ll bring him to our house tomorrow when the vet releases him if you’re good with that.”
Another hurdle down. Edge and Nina had offered to take him, too, but I knew Sawyer would prefer him to be closer to home.
“Thank you,” we said together.
Sawyer yawned as the door closed. “I don’t want to fall asleep and miss a minute of Dylan.”
The nurse came in before I could respond. “Hey there. How’s your pain?”
Sawyer grimaced. “It’s tolerable. I don’t want to delay breastfeeding.”
“What I’m giving you won’t affect your nursing. You’re due for more medicine. Let’s take some of that so you can rest. Do you want me to take Dylan back to the nursery or leave him here with you?”
Sawyer shook her head. “No, I want him to stay here with us.”
“Of course.”
I took Dylan as Sawyer took her medicine and the nurse lowered the head of her bed. “Wake me if you need anything.”
