The Christmas Fountain (Wishful 9)
With a smile, she rose to her toes and brushed her lips over his. “I say yes.”
“Then I guess you can have your key.” He held up his hand, clearly waiting for her to open hers.
She offered her palm and he dropped the keychain into it. But it wasn’t a key threaded on the chain. It was a ring.
Her gaze whipped back to Chad, who grinned at her. “I figure we might as well do it right.” Sobering, he dropped to one knee. “I know we haven’t been together all that long, but I don’t think it takes that long to know when it’s right. It’s right with us. You’re right for me, and I’m a hundred percent, crazy in love with you. I want to build a life and a family with you, and I don’t want to wait some prescribed amount of time to start. So marry me, Mary Alice. Marry me, and let’s start on the rest of forever.”
No hesitation, no question. He knew what he wanted, and what he wanted was her. So she didn’t hesitate because she knew what she wanted, too, and he was kneeling in front of her.
“Yes!”
Chad surged to his feet and lifted her with a whoop. As he swung her in a circle, Mary Alice went dizzy and giddy from more than just the momentum. From somewhere in the distance, she was sure she heard applause. They both looked back to where everyone from the wedding was cheering.
“She said yes!” he shouted.
Sonya shot him two thumbs up and waved them back to the party. “We have to celebrate!”
She was waiting with more glasses of champagne. “Well, let’s see it!”
Mary Alice opened her palm.
“Oh, don’t tell me you really went with that goofy alligator.”
“It’s memorable,” Chad protested.
Mary Alice laughed as he plucked it out of her hand and worked the ring off the keychain so he could slide it on her finger.
“What do you think?”
Looking down at the glitter of diamond and the contrast of her fair skin against the tan of his where their fingers were linked, Mary Alice felt her heart swell. “It’s right. It’s just exactly right. So are you. And your silly keychain.”
Smiling, she tipped her mouth up to his.

"Bachelor for life," he said...

And just when he's ready to tell the woman of his dreams that he wants to change that arrangement, she disappears, leaving him with no means of tracking her down, and a big ol' hole in his heart.
