Saving Savannah (Haven, Texas 3)

Jake looked thoughtful. “Could be, I guess. Someone who was upset that he was locked up maybe. Perhaps his son.”

“What about his girlfriend?” she asked.

“His girlfriend? I remember he had one. I seem to recall they hadn’t been together long.”

She’d probably had no idea. Poor woman.

“Could it be someone who doesn’t like the fact that I have two husbands?” The note had called her a whore.

Jake raised his eyebrows. “If that’s the case then I’m going to run my feet off because they’ll have to send letters to half the county. I haven’t had any other complaints.”

She nodded. She guessed that was true. Seemed she was just special. Yay!

“I ran into Max the other day in town, he said Atkinson has been pressuring you to sell.”

Logan scowled. “We’re not selling to that asshole. Max called him and told him that.”

“Did he take it well?”

“No. He didn’t. Max had to hang up on him in the end. You think this could be him? But why come after Savi? Why not attack Max or me?”

Jake gave her an apologetic look. “If I wanted one of you to do something then I’d go for your weakness. Savannah.”

She winced slightly at the thought of being their weakness.

“I talked to Alec Malone, he had an offer from Atkinson as well. Only his offer didn’t come in person. Guess Atkinson isn’t crazy enough to attempt to enter Malone’s land.”

“He sent Savannah a threatening letter because he wants us to sell to him? I’ll kill him.” Logan stepped forward, and Jake stood in his path.

“Calm down, Logan. We don’t know it’s him.”

“I’ll find out,” Logan promised.

“No, you won’t. You won’t go anywhere near him.”

“Wanna bet?”

Jake was shorter than Logan and not as wide through the chest and shoulders, but when he wanted to, he could make an impression. He gave Logan a cold look. “I know you want someone to blame. Someone to punish for upsetting Savannah, but we don’t know this was Atkinson, and even if we did, it’s up to the law to punish him.”

Logan got in Jake’s face. “If he did this then he’d better hope you get to him first, because I’ll kill him.”

“Logan.” She placed her hand on his arm, giving Jake an apologetic look. “I know you just want to protect me, but I’m safe. It was just a stupid note. It could have just been kids.”

Logan swung towards her. “Why would kids send you a letter calling you a whore?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Why would anyone? It’s not like Stanton . . . I mean, I think he was going to r-rape me, but . . .” Her voice dried up, nausea bubbling inside her.

“Hey.” Logan pulled her close once more. Then he kissed the top of her head. “It’s going to be all right. I’ll look after you.”

“Which is precisely what you’re going to do,” Jake said firmly. “The last thing Savannah needs right now is for you to go off half-cocked and get yourself arrested for doing something stupid. Let me do the investigating. You concentrate on Savannah.”

She sensed Logan’s reluctance, but he finally nodded.

“Does Max know about this?” Jake asked.

“We don’t know where he is.” And she felt more upset than ever by that. She needed him. Damn it, why wasn’t he here?

“Probably best he doesn’t know,” Logan added. “We don’t want him to get distracted.”
