“No, Madelyn can take care of it.”

She realized that he had no idea how his secretary felt about him, or he really didn’t care. She decided to bring it up to him at home.

They both stopped short when they saw his secretary at her desk, acting like she was busy. Nia could tell it was fake and wondered if Travis noticed. She was troubled by the thought of the woman listening at the door.

“I thought I told you to take a long lunch?”

She looked at him. “I did, but I also have a lot to do here.”

Nia felt how tense Travis got and pulled on his arm. “Let’s go,” she whispered against his chest.

“There’s my favorite perp.”

Nia looked around and saw the cop, David, who helped her in Colorado. She shrieked and ran to him and was swept up into his arms.

“How are you doing?”

“Good. David, why are you here?”

He set her away from him. “Travis needed my expertise.”

Travis came and wrapped an arm around her waist. She smiled up at Travis when he snorted.

“So, you work here all the time?” she asked.

“Yeah. I really like it so far.”

“He has been an asset to the team,” Travis said.

David grinned at him. “Look at you being all sweet.”

Nia laughed when Travis grunted out a swear word.

“Are you headed out, sweetling?”

She grinned at David. “Yes. I know you’re not out in the public like you were, but you still need to watch it.”

Both men chuckled.

“I promise. I don’t trust anyone. Not even little old ladies.”

She nodded. “Good. I hope I get to see you again.”

“I’ll be around,” David said before he waved and walked off.

“Come on, sweetheart. I’ll take you back to our place.”

Nia saw the look on the secretary’s face and fought not to flinch at the hatred. This was definitely something she needed to talk to Aleena about.

She felt the stares they got as they walked down the hallway toward the elevators. It was disconcerting and a little funny that Travis didn’t seem to realize the attention they were getting. Or he just didn’t care. She guessed it could be a bit of both.

He pulled her into his arms when they got through the door and kissed her like he hadn’t just made love to her in his office.

“I’ll see you in a few hours, baby.”

“Okay.”

After he left, her thoughts ping-ponged between the secretary and the other women the receptionist had told her tried to get him all the time. She was anxious and didn’t know what to do about it.
