Reckoning (Wolfes of Manhattan 5)

I leaned into his chest, sliding my breasts up and down as I glided up and down on his magnificent cock. I wasn’t after a climax, no. I was after this—this completeness, this togetherness.

This reassurance that I wasn’t alone. That I’d get through what was to come.

“I love you, Lacey,” Rock said, his voice husky.

I moaned. “I needed to hear that just at that moment. I love you too, Rock. Always.”

My words sent Rock over the edge, and this time he gripped my hips, his fingers sliding in the water, and pushed me down on his cock as he released.

His orgasm spurred my own, and it wasn’t the normal explosion. This was the opposite. An implosion. Of taking his body with mine, of becoming one, imploding together into a separate being.

Just what I needed.

Perfection.

I melted against him as we came together in the warm bubbled water.

And I knew, one way or another, we’d find our way out of this mess.

Nothing on this amazing menu sounded good to me either. Maybe Zee had a point. This wedding dinner wasn’t going to work.

She clearly didn’t feel about me the way I felt about her. Who could blame her? The ass who’d sired me had taken her to hell. She only escaped because of an elevator malfunction.

Pure luck.

She’d be dead if not for Roy being in the right place at the right time.

I finished my bourbon.

The server appeared. “Can I get you another drink, Mr. Wolfe?”

I nodded. “Absolutely, and an order of fois gras, please.” I could always eat fois gras, even when I was sick to my stomach. It was that delicious.

The server nodded toward Zee’s empty chair. “Anything for the lady?”

I shook my head. She wasn’t hungry, so I wouldn’t feed her. She’d be back soon enough, and I’d insist she order dinner. But I wouldn’t force an hors d’oeuvre on her.

A few minutes later, I was nursing another Pappy Van Winkle. Mama’s milk. Except my mother’s milk, if indeed I’d ever tasted any, would have been sour. I doubted Connie Wolfe had done any breastfeeding. I was the third born, and I was only three when Riley came along. If any breastfeeding had happened, I’d have been too young to recall.

Pappy’s was as smooth a bourbon as I’d ever tasted. My drink of choice before this recent discovery was Macallan, a single malt Scotch. No more.

Which reminded me of Nieves Romero. She’d ordered me a Macallan that night at the Wolfe Premiere bar in Las Vegas. The night I’d gotten her drunk on dirty martinis and she passed out. The night she’d promised to tell me everything, but then, the next day, her sister had been attacked.

Can’t make this shit up.

Every time I thought I was making some headway, something happened to derail it.

I took another sip.

Nieves and Leta.

Hoss and Manny.

Hank Morgan.

Father Jim.

Terrence.

And now, Irene Lucent.

And Zee. Zee, who I’d fallen hard for. Zee, who could never love me back because of who I was.

How had I come to this? I was the Wolfe of Manhattan, for God’s sake. I didn’t fall in love.

My phone buzzed. Terrence. I declined the call.

Then, thinking better of it, I called him back. I couldn’t allow him to suspect I was onto him.

“Sorry,” I said, when he answered. “Couldn’t get to the phone fast enough.”

“No worries. I hate to bother you on your wedding night, but—”

“This wedding night is a j—” I stopped abruptly. Terrence didn’t need to know this was a marriage of convenience. Surely, he already suspected, but I didn’t want to say anything that might give him further ammunition to take to whoever he was working with.

Of course, he’d probably been working for my father, who was now dead. How much did he know?

I had to find out. Maybe get Buck to rough him up a little. Though Terrence was big and muscled. Didn’t matter. Buck could get anyone to talk. Anyone.

I cleared my throat. “I’m sorry. I’ve got a little sore throat. What were you saying?”

“I hadn’t gotten to the reason for my call yet.”

“Oh? What is it, then?”

“There’s been a security breach in the main office.”

“Oh? Then why isn’t security calling me?”

“I was in there working late, and Dick asked me to get you and Rock in the loop.”

Working late? I hadn’t given him much to do lately, not since I found the discrepancy on his calendar.

“Always logging the hours,” I said. “Why don’t you go home now? Take a load off.”

“I’m about done here. You want to come down and take a look around?”

He thought I was home, that I could just take an elevator ride down into the office. Maybe he thought I was truly having a wedding night. I was, after all, me.

“I’ll just give Dick a call,” I said.

“He’s pretty busy.”

“He’s not too busy to talk to me. Thanks for being there and handling this, Terrence.”
