“Don’t touch the fucking door, Juan,” I snarl. “Or I’ll drop you like the sack of shit you are.”

He pauses at the door, staring hard at me, his lips trembling. He’s tweaking on something. All his men are, jittery and puffed-up, as though they’ve been snorting coke in between steroid injections.

“You’re done,” he says. “We’ll blow you and that bitch away.”

Anger rages in me when he nods at one of his men, and he steps forward and aims at Molly through the glass.

“You want her to die?” Juan says.

“Don’t. Touch. The. Fucking. Door.”

I gesture with my gun for him to step back, and finally, the idiot gets it. His face drops and he reaches into his pocket. He fires a shot at the window, causing Molly to whimper behind me.

I want to turn and cradle her in my arms, let her know it’s okay. I’d never let anything happen to us.

But I have to stay focused now.

Like the predator I am.

The bullet bounces with a ping noise.

“Well, fuck,” Juan says. “Looks like we’ve got ourselves a stalemate. That is unless I blow you through this gap, my friend.”

I smirk. “Let’s see who’s a better shot, you drug addict fuck. Let’s see who’s got the better reflexes.”

He scowls, looking around at his men, but they just stare blankly, ready to do what their so-called leader orders. Or more likely ready to do whatever it takes to get their next hit.

“Aren’t you going to ask how I got up here?” He grins, his eyes flashing, but I can tell it’s forced. He’s eyeing the door like he’s going to leap for it any second. “Go on, Murphy. Ask me.”

I grit my teeth, resisting the urge to shoot him. I have no idea how his men will react. Right now, fear is keeping that door almost closed, but if anger takes over they might rush it, and a man can only shoot so fast.

When I don’t answer, he sighs with a shrug.

“Fine, you boring fuck. We got the manager tucked up someplace nice and dark. You see, Murphy, that’s how we do business. Turns out there’s an old service elevator. Who knew?”

I squeeze the gun grip harder, clenching my teeth. I pay this place a small fortune for privacy and safety, and he keeps the full blueprints from me.

“Good for you,” I snarl. “But I’ve alerted my men, Juan. You haven’t got long.”

“Your men would already be here,” he grins. “You should’ve had them staying here with you, but I know, my friend, I know what you wanted. You wanted to stay nice and private so you could stuff this… what shall we call her, specimen?”

“I will shoot you,” I tell him flatly. “You don’t talk about my woman like that, you scum fuck.”

“How sweet,” he says. “Maybe I will let you attend her funeral.”

His men laugh gruffly.

I take a step forward, sensing Molly reaching out behind me, silently pleading with me not to get any closer. “I take it your men didn’t take too kindly to you getting treated like a little kid, then, Juan? I had you in that chokehold like my fucking toy. I could’ve snapped your druggie neck with less effort than it takes you to inject a needle.”

He lets out a pathetic boyish whimper, and I know I’m right.

“So you got these bastards hooked on drugs, and you told them some horseshit so they’d follow you. Like you’re going to take control again, you’ve got a plan… kidnap me and deliver me to the Cartel. But you’re a sloppy fuck. I could kill you all right now if I wanted. So it’s time to leave before my men get here.”

“Nice bluff,” Juan says, failing to mask the quivering fear in his voice. “How about this? I rob this place blind. I’ve bet you’ve got lots of interesting things here.”

I chuckle. “You came here to burgle me? Fucking hell, Juan. I thought Cartel bosses were supposed to have balls.”

I’m not keeping a tight rein on my anger, but his comments about Molly are still bouncing around my head, taunting me in the most vicious way. I can’t stand the thought of him talking about her like that, disrespecting her, and being so cowardly he does it behind the safety of a gun, and with the numbers to back him up.

“You think I’ve got something to lose here?” Juan snarls. “Kill me. My men will fucking slaughter you for it. And then we’ll make good use of that prime young—”

I shoot him in the knee.

The bullet rips through his pants and a bloody hole appears, smoke rising from the barrel of my gun.

Molly flinches at the noise, Juan’s men tense up, but I just stare at him as he falls to the floor and writhes around.

He lets out a whining noise, clutching his leg.
