April’s stomach swam. She’d forgotten all about it. The job on offer was at Oasis’ head office in Boston.

“I didn’t even know I was still being considered for the position,” Vicki continued. “The board wasn’t too impressed with me after I gave up the Oakmont Street project. Not to mention the fact that I’m in a relationship with the woman who’s been standing in the way of the project.”

“Did you get the promotion?” April asked.

“I did.” Vicki leaned back and crossed her legs. “They said despite my recent ‘indiscretions,’ I’m still the best candidate for the job.”

“Oh.” April avoided Vicki’s gaze. “That’s great.”

“Hey.” Vicki took April’s hand. “I said no, of course.”

“But you wanted this so badly. Your career is so important to you.”

“It is. But you’re even more important to me. After everything we’ve been through, I’d be an idiot to throw this relationship away.”

“We could move to Boston together,” April said. “I could get a job there.”

“No,” Vicki said. “I couldn’t live with myself if I took you away from West Heights. This place is your home.”

Relief washed over April. Vicki was right. April could never leave West Heights, let alone the city. At least, not right now.

“Besides, I don’t need a promotion to prove myself. I don’t need to prove myself to anyone. I know what I’m capable of, and so does everyone who’s important to me.” Vicki squeezed April’s hand. “I didn’t realize it until I ran into my parents at that charity ball, but my obsession with my career only meant that my life was still being dictated by my family’s expectations, even if I was going against what they wanted for me. By choosing to follow my heart instead, I feel like I’m finally free of them, in a way.”

“As long as you’re doing what makes you happy,” April said.

“I am. Besides, I’ve been thinking about finding a new job.”

“Really? You’ve been at Oasis for so long.”

“That’s why I need a change,” Vicki said. “I only took the job at Oasis because no one else would hire me. With all the experience I have now, my options have opened up. I’ve been putting out feelers, and I already have a few tentative offers.”

“That’s great,” April said.

“What about you? How’s the new library shaping up?”

“Everything’s finally starting to come together. Once renovations are up and running, I’m going to have so much free time.” April stretched out and sank into the couch. “I have no idea what I’m going to do with myself.”

“I have a few ideas.” Vicki took April’s glass from her hand and placed it on the table next to them, then she leaned in and pressed her lips to April’s.

April deepened the kiss. Her hands roamed down Vicki’s body, feeling the slight swell of her slender hips, her flat stomach, her soft breasts. Vicki grasped at April’s curves with double the intensity. April let out a blissful hum. Every time Vicki touched her, it set off fireworks inside.

Vicki broke away. “I want you in the bedroom and out of those clothes.”

“Yes, ma’am.” April jumped up from the couch.

They made their way to the bedroom where April slipped off her jacket and dress. Vicki kicked off her jeans but left her blouse on.

Vicki gestured toward April’s bra and panties. “Take those off too. Then stand by the bed and wait for me.”

April stripped off her underwear and sat on the bed. She crossed her legs and leaned back on her elbows, watching Vicki’s growing irritation.

Vicki’s eyes rolled down the length of April’s naked body. “You just can’t help but test me, can you?”

April grinned.

Vicki shook her head. “You’re on very thin ice.” She went to the chest at the end of her bed and sifted through it. Finally, she pulled out the red strap-on.

The ache in April’s core flared up, her body remembering the last time Vi
