“Yeah, I think that you might be right.” I nod slowly. “I just have to tell him as much.”

“You don’t look like the sort of person who offers rejection easily.”

“No, I’ll admit…” I chuckle. “It isn’t something that I’m particularly used to.”

“You’ll be fine.” Rae turns back to look at Zac. “He’ll live and I don’t think he’ll bite your head off either. But since this is your first time, you and I should head out for drinks afterwards. It is a pay day after all.”

I smile thinly. Yes, it’s a pay day, but it isn’t a healthy pay day, the cash reward isn’t great for the job, especially since I have been given a bigger role than I initially thought that I would have… but I do want to go out.

“Yeah, sounds good to me. I could use a drink.”

“At least we don’t have much to do today.”

Once Rae is called into position, I turn back and see Zac once more. He’s giving me a hopeful smile which only makes me feel terrible. But Rae is right. I do need to let him down gently because he isn’t ever going to be the one for me. There isn’t a spark, there will never be a spark. Shane has ruined me.

I step closer to Zac and tell him that unfortunately I cannot go out with him. I tell him that I’m just finding my feet at the moment and that I left someone behind who I need to recover from. It isn’t exactly the full truth but it allows him to save face. This does make me increasingly excited to get out tonight after work though. I need it.

“Not him either?” Rae shrieks, happiness shining through her eyes as she points to a guy at the end of the bar who she deems ‘right for me’. She really is beautiful when she lets that mask slip. “Are you serious?”

“I’m sorry. I just don’t see him like that.”

“He is hot! I don’t understand.” She pinches me in the side. “Unless there is someone.”

“What do you mean?” I lean in closer to her because the noise of the bar is getting too much.

“I mean you have someone. You’ve met someone that you actually like. That’s why you aren’t attracted to this super hot guy.”

I shift uncomfortably. She’s right but I don’t want to get into that conversation. I feel stupid, admitting that I had one crazy night with a guy and now I can’t stop thinking about him. That will make me look like a bunny boiler, and I have only just started hanging out with Rae. I don’t want her to think badly of me.

I need her friendship. I’m sure I need her more than she needs me.

“I don’t know; I don’t think so. It isn’t like that, I just…”

“Hmmm, yeah alright.” She shrugs and smirks. “I’ll believe you, thousands wouldn’t. But if you ever do want to talk about the mystery man in your life. I’m always here.” She leaves that lovely statement hanging in the air for just a couple of seconds before she destroys it all over again. “Is he married or something? Is that what it is?”

I laugh so hard my belly shakes, but her words do leave a bitter pill in my mouth. He didn’t look married, there was no evidence of a wife in his home, but that could be right…

No, it couldn’t be. He’s a playboy through and through, no wife. There’s no chance. He just fucks and leaves, that’s all. He never made any promises to me and I didn’t ask for them. I just need to push him from my mind, that’s all.

“Come on, let’s get a drink.” I roll my eyes. “And stop all this crazy talk. I just want to have fun.”

Chapter Six – Shane

Work rides my ass. It absolutely destroys me. It’s one of those days which doesn’t seem to end and nothing is going right. No money is lost, it isn’t bad in that way, it’s just a pain in the ass, that’s all. It leaves me itching, wanting something, craving someone. And only one person in particular as well. I don’t want to head out and find a hottie to get my much needed release with, I only have one person in mind.

Tia Cooke. The sexy, sweet little minx who rocked my world only a week or so ago.

I never act this way; I never have my heart attached to one person. I usually get bored and distracted by now, but it seems like the instinct that told me I would want to see this woman again was right. I definitely do. It doesn’t even matter that I don’t have her number or anything. I know where she lives, I can just head out and see her. After the incredible night that we had together I know for a fact that she will want to see me too.
