“It’s a relief, of course,” Ellie replied. “And Santa Martina is definitely safer now that Nagle’s in jail for life. But no matter what, I know I’m safe so long as you’re with me.”
Hal’s voice dropped to a protective rumble. “Always.”
She reached up and ruffled his hair, enjoying its silky texture and the warmth of his skin. Enjoying his voice, his presence, his strength. His steadfast love.
Ellie had no more doubts, about him or about herself. Hal would stand by her side, and she’d stand by his.
Always.
