“Oh no.” She chunked them into the lake, dying of laughter before jumping back in.

“Fair is fair, baby.” He ran out of the water and grabbed her clothes.

“Jason, I’m sorry,” she said as sweetly as she could. “Please. That really is an expensive outfit.”

“Is it?” He winked and got his keys from the seat of the car. He opened the trunk and put the dress inside.

“Jason, I can’t go back to town without my clothes.”

“Really? But you expect me to?” He laughed and slammed the lid down, locking her dress away.

“Now you’re going to pay for that, mister.” She swam back a bit from the shore. “Just try to get me and see what happens.”

“I forgot how much I loved your sass, baby.” He dove in and the war continued.

Exhausted after several battles, he carried her back to the car. “I love you, Phoebe.”

She placed a hand on his cheek, enjoying the feel of his stubble on her fingertips. “I love you, Jason, but you better not have caused me to catch a cold.”

“There’s that sass I so love.” He kissed her, helping her to remember how wonderful a man he was.

Chapter Ten

As they crossed over Silver Spoon Bridge, Phoebe leaned down low into Jason’s naked body. “Can you imagine what your chances of being reelected are if anyone sees us?”

He laughed. “Not good. I can see the headlines of the Destiny Daily tomorrow. ‘In the buff, sheriff and attorney are caught joyriding around town.’”

“I hope you don’t have to pull anyone over for speeding. That’ll ruin everything.”

He died laughing and she joined in. “I think I’ll turn on my lights and siren on the way to your house, baby.”

“Don’t you dare, Jason.”

He kissed her wet hair. “I have such fun with you.”

“Me, too. No one can make me laugh like you.”

He pulled up into her driveway. The streetlight illuminated her porch, so tiptoeing was out. They would have to make a dash to her front door or else her neighbors would get an eyeful.

“Ready, baby?”

“I can’t find my keys,” she said, rifling through her purse.

“I can break down the door if necessary,” he said, grabbing his cell and gun and some other device.

“Are you so bent on making sure someone sees us? No commotion. Please. I have to live on this street. Found them. Let me get your clothes. I’ll throw them in the dryer.” With his uniform in one hand and her keys in the other, she opened her car door. “Last one inside has to make the drinks while the other one cleans up.”

Not waiting for an answer, she sprinted to her door.

Jason passed her, blocking her way. “You don’t play fair, Phoebe Blue.”

“Look who’s talking?” She saw one of her neighbor’s porch lights come on and she froze. “Jason, please.”

He laughed. “I do like being sheriff. Maybe I should go see if there’s something your neighbors need.”

“I beg you, don’t.”
