She stiffened in his arms when she heard a commotion inside the suite. “Wyatt!” she called in fear. There was a loud crack and she could hear the police scuffling inside. There was no way to know what was happening.
Jason held her tightly.
Something crashed against the wall and she shuddered.
A few minutes later, the door was kicked open. She stared in disbelief when her uncle was escorted from the suite. His face was bleeding. His eye was already swollen shut. She looked down at the handcuffs on his wrists.
“Your own family.” He spat a mouthful of blood on the floor. “You little bitch.”
“You are not my family,” she hissed.
The police officers holding him shoved him into the elevator. “That’s enough.”
“Mr. Miller, we can call you if we have further questions?” Wyatt faced the lead officer asking questions.
“Of course. Anything Jason and I can do to make sure he is behind bars for the rest of his life.”
“Then we’ll call you, sir.” He looked at Kayla. “Miss Dauer, can we take a few minutes to get a statement from you at the station?”
She nodded.
Wyatt stepped in front of her. “You can take her statement here. Thank you for responding so quickly, but I’m sure you can appreciate the ordeal Ms. Dauer has been through tonight. I don’t think the station is necessary. Why don’t we step inside the suite?”
Wyatt walked with him inside. Kayla was amazed by how easily he could sway the police officer to change his protocol.
“You up for this?” Jason asked, holding her hand.
“I’m fine. Really. If answering some questions, helps. Then, yes. I’m up for it.” They walked inside the room and she sat at the dining room table while the officer went through a series of questions.
Finally, he wrapped up with the last one and told Kayla he felt confident he had all the information he needed on her uncle.
Wyatt walked him to the elevators and returned to the suite.
“Are you ok?” he looked at her.
She walked from Jason’s arms into his. She nodded. “Now I am.”

“Really, I’m fine. Stop fussing. Nothing happened, except some extortion.” Wyatt had refused to let her feet touch the floor since the police had left. “You can put me down.”
Jason was on the phone with the front desk.
“What’s going on?” she asked him.
“I want to get another room. There’s no way you’re staying here tonight.” He looked over the half-eaten room service trays with distain.
She nodded. “You’re right. I’m not. I want to go home.”
Wyatt squeezed her shoulders. “You’re in shock. Putting you on a plane is the last thing you need. We’ll take care of you tonight and we’ll leave in the morning.”
“I’m not in shock.” She looked at him defiantly. “I want to be in my bed with you and you.” She turned to catch Jason’s attention. “I’m not hurt. He was never going to physically harm me. He never has. I was scared I had ruined everything. And being with you two is the only way that’s going to feel any better.”
Jason put down his phone. “You haven’t ruined anything. Your uncle is an asshole who tried to sell you to us. He’s going to prison, Kayla.”
Wyatt shook his head. “If this is anyone’s doing, it’s mine. I wanted to pay him off and if I had, this never would have happened.”
