Love at First Sight
“Your phone is what saved you,” Tamara warns me. “We found it using that app.”
“Ah! Well, I always recommend it to my clients anyway, but now I’ve got a story to accompany it. It is a useful thing. Let’s just hope that we don’t ever have to use it again!”
It takes a while but I finally manage to get my phone back and discharge myself. I don’t think the doctor is too pleased about me leaving but he doesn’t have any choice. I’m off, it’s pointless.
“I cannot believe you tried to give yourself amnesia,” Katherine jokes while punching me in the arm as we finally make our escape. “As if we haven’t had enough drama in our lives when it comes to that.”
I shoot her a look. “Now you know better than anyone I’d never do that. I can’t believe they’d even think that was it. Honestly.” I shake my head in dismay. “I told them right away that I was fine.”
“If you wanted attention, mate, you should have jus asked for it!” Al joins in. “Such a drama queen.”
“Oh yeah, that’s all it was. I just didn’t think I was getting enough focus so I knocked my own head.”
“I always knew you were like that, now I have full evidence. You’re a pain in the ass.”
Tamara grips tightly onto my hand in a possessive manner. She doesn’t join in the joking and I can tell be the translucent color of her skin that she won’t be in the joking mood all night long. There’s only one thing for it.
“I think that we should go back to ours, let the sitter free, she’s probably been there for longer than we planned anyway, and we should just have a night in there. Have a few drinks, that sort of thing.”
“Yeah. Sounds good to me,” Katherine replies. “I’m tired now anyway. We should get a take away.”
“A take away with the girls and the babies… not what I had planned.” When Al sees my expression he rapidly changes his tune. “Oh, but it’s fine.” He mentally seems to beg Katherine for help. “I like that plan.”
“I’ll tell you what, Al, if it makes you happy, you can choose the food. How does that sound?”
Just I thought it would, that sparks an argument between Katherine and Al about what we’re going to eat - I never thought the day would come when I was grateful for it - giving me the chance to snuggle Tamara in closer to me. “I’m sorry if I worried you,” I whisper to her. “That wasn’t my plan at all. I didn’t mean…”
“No, I know. I just can’t help freaking out when it comes to memory stuff, that’s all.”
I rest my hand over hers. “Let’s just think about the wedding instead. That’s much more fun. Think about the dress, the flowers, the location… the fact that the babies will probably cry all the way through it…”
“Oh yeah, that’s true.” I feel her shoulders roll forwards as she relaxes. “That’s true. I’m sure they’ll ruin it for us. But I wouldn’t change them for anything in the world, even if they’re a nightmare.”
“I can’t believe this is supposed to be our nights and we’re the ones putting these two to bed,” I chuckle at Tamara. “And they aren’t even the kids! How does that happen?”
“I know, I know. But they drank too much so what can we do? We can’t send them home. Luckily, we have big enough couches for the pair of them to sleep it off on. They’re going to be hungover to hell tomorrow!”
“They will have to get up fairly early, I need their help setting things up.” I laugh and shake my head as amusement races through me. Nothing normal ever happens to us. “I suppose it’s good that I can keep an eye on them here. I wouldn’t want them bailing on me for the happiest day of our lives.”
“I can always help…”
“No way,” I insist. “You know I want you to relax and get yourself ready…”
She reaches up and brushes her fingers lightly across my forehead, searching for a bump that went down hours ago. Her touch feels nice though, so I don’t stop her ever though I could.
“I can’t help but worry about you. Especially if you’re going to throw yourself about trying to give yourself a head injury.” At least this time she says it with a bit of a smile. “What are you trying to do? Give me a heart attack? Get revenge on me? Remember, my head injury wasn’t done on purpose…”
“Yeah, yeah, alright.” I grab her hands and tug them around my waist. “I know. I’m sorry. But now you know how it feels… it isn’t much fun, is it?”
She knows I’m only teasing her but she pinches me hard anyway. Then she raises onto her toes and she crashes her mouth against mine. “You know, this is almost our last night together as just a couple. Soon, we’ll be man and wife. Together forever… or at last untold husband number two anyway…”
“Don’t you dare suggest such a thing! I’m only getting married once and divorce isn’t an option.” I offer her a one shouldered shrug. “You might as well know that this will be forever.”
“Hmmm, that changes things. I don’t know if I can do it forever. That’s a really long time…” Her face breaks out into a smile when she sees my horrified expression. “Alright, fine, forever is doable. But only because I love you.”
“I love you too, even when you’re cruel to me.” I pat her on the butt. “Now, come on, let’s go to bed. Some of us have a lot to do in the morning.”
“Oh yeah, luckily for me I only have two needy babies to take care of. My day will e a breeze compared to yours.”
