Blaze (Steel Brothers Saga 21)
“I love you,” he says.
“I love you more.” I smile.
“Not possible.” He brushes his lips over mine once more and then opens his car door.
In a flash, he’s at the passenger side, opening the door for me.
Such a gentleman. I grab his hand and exit the car.
“Thank you,” he says.
“For what?”
“For helping me. For helping me see the beauty in everything. I meant it when I said you’re an angel.”
“I’m hardly an angel.”
“And I’m hardly the strongest man in the world, but Callie, you make me feel like I could be.”
His eyes are so green in the moonlight, and I stand on my toes and kiss his lips gently. “We’re better together, aren’t we?”
“We are.” He walks me to the door, kisses me again, and then leaves.
From the window, I watch him drive away.
So much I need to tell him. But not tonight. I won’t spoil what’s left of his good mood.
What will he do, though, when I tell him the new theory Rory, Jesse, and I came up with? That Diana was targeted and drugged on purpose?
We could very well be wrong.
Or we could very well be right.
CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
DONNY
“Dad, I have to talk to you.”
Dad is in his office typing something into his computer. He turns. “Sure, son. Are you okay?”
I take a seat across from his desk.
Hours ago, I vowed to continue to see the beauty in everything. My mood reflected that.
Now? All I can see is my father—my big, strong father who could be dead if not for some random ranch hand out for a jog.
I’m not ready to lose him.
“No, I’m not okay. My father was shot. And then poisoned. I’m far from okay.”
“I’m going to recover fully, Donny. I’m going to be fine.”
“I know, and I’m grateful, but Dale and I are going to find out who did this. I swear.”
“You leave that to the pros.”
“We have resources the pros don’t.”
