Summer Love in the City (Summer Instalove)
your boss say?” Devin said quickly. “Did he like your stuff?”
I raised an eyebrow. “How did you know that my boss was a man?”
He shrugged. “You said that the best assignments always went to two other guys. So I just
assumed it was a bit of a boys club going on.”
He had a point there. “It was amazing,” I smiled. “He doesn’t talk much, but he definitely
liked my work. And he was very appreciative that I came in on my vacation.”
“That’s the ticket,” he said, leading me to his car. “Always be the go-to guy. Or girl. You
know what I mean,” he grinned.
I laughed. “Like a fixer? In those mob movies they always have a guy who does the dirty
work.”
“Exactly,” he said as he started driving. “Let’s hope that you never have to dispose of
bodies, or dangerous evidence.” He chuckled. “Hey – can I take you to dinner? I was just
talking to my friend, and he said there’s a restaurant event uptown tonight.”
“Okay, sure.”
I was starting to wonder if Devin was a little too well-connected. He always seemed to have
a guy for everything. I didn’t know whether that should be a red flag or not. Was he well-
liked, or well-connected…in an underground sort of way?
“I’ll have to go to my place to change,” I said.
“Sure, baby.” His easy smile was so warm, but the tiny sliver of paranoia made me look into
his eyes differently. Was there any way such a great guy could be...dark, somehow?
CHAPTER TEN
* Devin *
Walking into an exclusive event with my arm around Kim was pretty much the happiest I’d
ever been. I loved being among the few with access to truly unique occasions. Tonight was
extra special, since I knew both the chefs and the owners. It was rare that my past life and
current life aligned.
My name was on the list, and once again, the host made a big deal over how gorgeous Kim
was, kissing her on both cheeks and offering her a flower wrist corsage to fit in with the
tropical theme of the restaurant. She obviously wasn’t used to this sort of attention, and her
faint blush was adorable.
