Captured Nanny (The Nannies) - Page 35

Fear at being a crap mom. Anger at feeling a little forced into having a child so young.

During Evelyn’s birth, Rain recalled being terrified. The pain had been unlike anything she’d ever experienced, but the moment the nurse put her on her chest and she stared into Evelyn’s eyes, she had been in love. Her little girl had been worth every single day of morning sickness, the back pain, the stretch marks, and the tender breasts. She had been worth it all.

After she kissed her daughter’s face, Evelyn giggled and tried to fight her off.

Rain moved on the bed so Evelyn could snuggle up against her.

“Did you miss me?” Evelyn asked.

“Yes, I missed you.”

“I will go and fetch you some soup,” Wolf said.

“I’m pleased you’re well,” Leanne said.

Rain looked at the maid, and she smiled at her.

With the door closed, she turned her attention to Evelyn. “What have you been doing? Tell me. Have you played? Watched movies without me? Did you forget my name?” She winked at her daughter.

Evelyn laughed.

“Wolf played dolls with me. He’s not very good. He makes them have man voices. It’s so silly.”

She stroked her daughter’s nose. “I don’t think Wolf’s played with dolls before, honey. He’s a boy.”

“Can Wolf be my daddy?” Evelyn asked.

Rain froze. “Your daddy?”

“Yeah. He’s nice. He’s like a superdad.”

“Sweetheart, Wolf isn’t your dad. You do know this.”

“I know.” Evelyn pouted. “But he can be my dad?”

Rain licked her dry lips. This wasn’t exactly an easy conversation. How did she tell her daughter that the man she wanted to be dad had a lifestyle that sold women? She couldn’t tell Evelyn that they were trapped.

Imprisoned.

But I don’t see you trying to run away anytime soon.

“I … what else did you do?” Rain asked. “I missed playing with dolls.”

Evelyn told her every single detail of her days, from playing with Wolf, to watching movies. They had dinner together, but Wolf spent a lot of his time coming to check on Rain.

Her daughter was just telling her about her morning when Wolf returned with a tray.

“Move over, baby girl,” he said. Evelyn wriggled away, giving her some space.

Rain sat up as he put a tray of food on her lap.

“The chef says this soup is like pure medicine. A vegetable broth and the bread, which feels like a damn brick, will help to soak up all ills,” Wolf said.

Rain took the spoon and had a sip of the soup. It was full of flavor and delicious. The bread was stiff. She had no choice but to chunk it up and put it in the soup to make it edible.

Wolf had also brought Evelyn a book to read as she ate.

“Thank you for taking care of her,” Rain said.

“It’s a pleasure. She’s a good little girl.” He stroked Evelyn’s cheek and then turned to her.

Rain could only finish half of the soup. “I’m full,” she said, putting the spoon down.

“That’s fine. The chef said a half bowl is better than nothing.”

Wolf picked up the tray and carried it outside.

Rain expected him to take longer, but he returned, and this time, she noticed he was in sweatpants and a shirt.

She’d never seen him dressed like this. It was a little disconcerting at first. He was a powerful man, and she’d started to associate him in the expensive kind of business suits.

This man looked … homely.

She licked her drip lips as he nudged Evelyn over.

“How about I read this to you?” Wolf asked.

“Yay!” Evelyn threw her arms up.

Rain lifted the covers up for Evelyn to climb in. Wolf waited for her to get comfortable before he opened the book. He cleared his throat, which made her giggle. He was good with her daughter, and she saw that Evelyn idolized him.

This was bad.

When he got bored, what would become of them?

She held on to her daughter a little tighter, realizing she was worried about leaving him. When did that happen? How did it happen?

He was the man who kidnapped her.

This wasn’t a love match.

They were not dating.

She listened to Wolf read, feeling her eyes get heavy. Evelyn had calmed in her arms.

The last thing she needed was to fall asleep, not when she had to come up with a plan.

Chapter Eleven

Two weeks later

Rain made a full recovery.

The only problem Wolf found was that Evelyn had worked her way into his and Rain’s bed for the past two weeks. She always had a book ready for him to read, and well, he was missing Rain.

Staring out of his office window, he saw Rain on her knees, tickling a giggling Evelyn. That child was a constant, nonstop, but he wanted his woman.

He missed Rain’s kisses.

Her mouth.

Her hands.

A knock at the door pulled him from the window as Leanne entered his office, carrying a tray.

“I want you to take Evelyn for the afternoon,” he said. “Play with her. Send Rain to my room, please,” he said.
