Want Me (Mess with Me 4)

“Hey.”

We don’t say anything else but the way his eyes roam over the black lace bra and panty set I’m wearing says all I need to know.

He groans. “Why did I plan to take you out again?”

“So you could surprise me.”

“I’ve got a surprise for you all right.”

I laugh at his shamelessness. “Nothing is stopping me from getting my real surprise.”

“Pushy woman,” he comments but he’s smiling when he says it. “I’ll leave you to finish getting ready.”

The outfit I chose to wear tonight is a basic white sundress but it clings in all the right places and is unexpectedly comfortable. All I need is to add my favorite gold necklace and some diamond studs and I’m ready for anything. Since I have no idea where we’re going, I don’t want to be too dressed up. I catch a glimpse of my face in the mirror as I’m leaving the bathroom and have to pause at how flushed and happy I look. My dark hair is cooperating for once and it makes my blue eyes look brighter.

The excitement that’s been on a low burn all day rushes to the fore.

I’m about to get engaged!

Law is waiting when I enter the bedroom. He’s changed into jeans and a black polo shirt that makes his white hair stand out even more. He is so gorgeous that sometimes it takes my breath away.

“You look beautiful,” he says and holds out a hand.

I grab it and let him pull me into the space between his legs. My arms rest on his shoulders as he nuzzles against my neck.

“So do you. But you’re wearing jeans so that must mean we’re going somewhere casual.”

His lips curl against my skin. “Guess all you want. I’m not saying a word.”

I follow him out and down the hallway throwing out guesses the whole time.

“Restaurant? Carnival? Ooh, art gallery?”

He opens the front door and indicates with a flourish of his arm that I should precede him out the door. The smile on his face tells me he’s enjoying keeping this secret.

“Circus? Fundraiser for endangered wildlife? Secret laboratory?”

“All good theories but …nope.”

As Law drives, I take a quick glance around his car. There’s nothing on the backseats to provide a clue. Every mile that passes notches my excitement higher and by the time we stop at a local park, I’m ready to burst.

“This is where we’re going? This is the surprise?”

He shakes his head. “I never said the surprise was where we were going.”

I scramble out of the car after him, not waiting for him to come around and get my door. We meet at the back of the car where Law opens the trunk and then pulls out a picnic basket.

“Come on. Let’s find a place to sit.”

It’s not as hot now that it’s after seven o’clock which I’m grateful for. Law finds a shady spot under a tree and then pulls a checkered blanket from the basket on his arm. I take the other side and help him spread it out. Once we sit, he places the basket next to us and starts taking food out. His basket of wonders is apparently much bigger than it looks because he has silverware, plates and even mini wine glasses inside. In less than five minutes, we have a meal set that looks like it belongs in a magazine.

“I have to say, I am impressed. This is beautiful.”

“And you were worried.”

“I wasn’t worried. Just confused. You know I hate surprises.”

He laughs as he pours us some wine. “I do know that. My Type-A Anya. You do like to know everything that is going on.”
