Rose placed a hand on his cheek and kissed him back. He wanted them to be alone, and all too soon, he came back to the chorus of applause.
The sparkle in Rose’s eyes at that moment would stay with him forever. Ross, as usual, was there, and Darius took Rose’s hand, leading her out of the church to where the photographers waited. He refused to let his wife go, and he’d told Ross that all pictures would be taken with the two of them.
With his ring firmly on her finger, he felt a little relieved. He spent his life alone, working his ass off and never expecting to find any form of love. Now he had it all.
Two months of careful planning, and she was nearly his.
He rested a hand on her stomach, and he only hoped that all his careful planning had finally paid off. He wanted a family, an heir, a reason to exist beyond dollars and cents.
Ross clicked his fingers, instructed, and as Darius had Rose in his arms, he leaned in close. “Do you have any idea how much I want to get you alone?” he asked.
“So you can tear this dress off?”
“You’ve read my mind.”
Rose turned in his arms and smiled up at him. “Actually, there is something I need to tell you. It’s important.”
With so many ears on them, not to mention eyes, Darius knew Rose wouldn’t tell him whatever secret she was keeping. What could be more important than their wedding day?
The moment Ross was occupied, he made a run for it, rushing toward the limousine. They would all have to catch up at the reception.
Ross looked a little flabbergasted that he’d made a run for it before all the pictures were done, but as always, he was the utmost professional.
Turning to his wife, Darius cupped her cheek.
He’d waited for this for the longest time. She was his precious gift.
“What is it you want to tell me?”
“Er, don’t…” She cringed and then took a breath. “So, I think I should just … I’m pregnant.”
At first, Darius wasn’t sure what she meant, and then all at once, he realized what she was saying. A happiness unlike anything he’d experienced washed over him.
Peace. Contentment.
He’d been wanting to get her pregnant for the longest time. Gripping the back of her neck, he pulled her in close. “God, I love you.”
“You’re not … upset?”
“I have nothing to be upset about. You’re going to make a fantastic mother.”
“And you’re going to be an amazing father, Darius. I know it.”
He hoped so. He wanted to have it all with her, to give Rose the world. Darius couldn’t believe this was finally happening to him. The chance he’d always wanted, a family of his own.
This was the true gift to him, and he was never going to do anything to fuck it up.
The End
