He raises one eyebrow, sighing. “You’re right. I know you’re right.”

I clench my hand over his again. “If you can stick up for me like you did, then you can do it for you. You owe it to yourself, and to your father, to be an even better man.”

A smile rises on those beautiful, pouty lips of his. “Since when did you become so wise, oh wise one?”

I chuckle back. “Since I realized just how goddamned lucky I am, I guess. I mean, I’m married to Eli frickin’ Prescott, for goodness’ sake! How is it not a good time to be alive knowing that?”

His light laughter lifts my spirits. “I’m just a mere man beneath it all.”

“And modest too,” I jest back. “A trait any woman could wish for in a man.” My smile fades as our eyes lock again. “In all seriousness, I’m glad we had this talk.”

Eli’s smile back is sincere. “Me too. To be honest, I never thought in a million years we would ever have this sort of conversation. Yet here we are, three years after marriage, and it somehow feels as though it’s our first date. Does that make sense?”

Internally, I laugh at the irony of it all.

“Oh, believe me when I say it makes perfect sense.”
