“And thanks for the flowers,” she goes on. Still not looking at me. “They’re very nice.”
“My pleasure.”
We both pause, and she pushes her glasses up with one knuckle.
“You hungry?” I ask, but she’s already shaking her head.
“I’ve actually gotta be somewhere.”
“We could make it quick,” I hear myself say.
“Sorry,” she says, and opens the door like she’s waiting for me to go through. I do it before she seems to remember herself. “Raincheck?”
“Deal,” I say, and walk through the door as if I haven’t noticed a damn thing amiss. “You better be good for it.”
“Of course,” she says, her voice tight, so I leave Kat’s office and go back to my own, wondering why I feel like there’s an entire phalanx of spears pointed right at me.
