Constantine shrugs. “Now we wait to see if Tiamat wants the girl back badly enough to start a war.”

“I think that is probably a done deal. We should just tell Her that she isn’t the true heir,” Devon says. “Maybe She will back off.”

“We will do no such thing!” Constantine roars and then clamps his mouth shut as Delinda snuffles in her sleep and turns over.

“Why not? She’ll back off then,” Devon says.

“Are you as stupid as you look? I thought you said you had a brain in your head,” Constantine says. “What do you think will happen to Aefre if they find out she hasn’t given them the true heir?”

“Aw, shit,” Devon says with a flush. “I never even thought about that. Man, this is so complicated. I hate it,” he adds glumly.

“Well, that makes two of us,” Constantine agrees.

“Sooo, do your powers work here?” Devon asks casually.

“What powers?” Constantine asks with narrowed eyes.

“Oh, please. We all know you have had a bump in the offensive powers department. So, do they work here or not? Mine are kind of sketchy,” Devon says.

“I haven’t had cause to test them,” Constantine says, seeing no reason to deny it further.

“That’s not helpful,” Devon mutters. “Not surprisingly.”

“Did Aefre tell you?” Constantine asks idly, straightening his cuffs.

“Yep,” Devon says and Constantine growls at him.

“That woman has a huge mouth,” he grouses.

“Why do you not want people to know? I mean if it were me, I’d want people to be even more shit-scared of me,” Devon says.

“It’s my business,” Constantine says shortly, but he enjoys the ‘even more’ part of that sentence. “Did she tell you everything?”

“Uh huh,” Devon says. “Man, that is some whacked-out shit. But I guess it makes sense on some level. They had to go somewhere, right?”

“Right,” Constantine says and ma

kes a mental note to berate his wife for telling secrets when she returns.

After a moment of silence, Tabetha quietly opens the door and smiles at them. “I’ll watch the Princess,” she says.

They both agree readily, as neither one of them has any experience in dealing with children and have no idea what to do with her when she wakes up. Constantine slips into Aefre’s room–his and Aefre’s room–and Devon follows him.

“I need to speak to Lizzie when she gets back,” Devon says. “Mind if I wait?”

“Actually, yes I do,” Constantine says.

“Tough,” Devon says and jumps on the bed to make himself more comfortable.

“What is so urgent that it can’t wait?” Constantine growls at him.

“None of your business,” Devon replies candidly. “But that is another matter. I need to see first with my own eyes that she is dealing with this.”

“Fine,” Constantine grouses and sits himself in the armchair to await his wife’s return.
