Her Mafia Destiny (Maclean Mafia Men 1)
Chapter Fourteen
“Why in the world did we have to come here now?”
Alastair kept his arm around her waist and maneuvered her into the elevator. They were immediately surrounded by half a dozen of his men. He had more checking out their suite, and then they’d take turns standing outside his hotel door. The rest would be in the rooms across and on either side of them. He wasn’t taking any chances with her. He was already, taking her away from home and its immense security, but he felt the greatest danger for her was there at the moment.
“Because I wanted to get away. So why wait?”
He felt her stare at him, but fortunately, she didn’t ask any more questions right then. They were in their room within five minutes with the door locked behind them.
“Oh, wow,” she said and walked over to the window. She could see a wide expanse of the city lights, and since it was dark outside, they stood out.
He walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.
“Look, Alastair. It’s so beautiful.”
“I think you’re beautiful.”
She snorted and looked at him over her shoulder. “You’re such a smooth talker.”
He laughed. “I say we get into bed. I want to hold you. You can take a quick shower, just don’t get your hair wet. I’ve got some things coming for you tomorrow.”
“That’s silly. I could have just packed a bag.”
“I didn’t want to waste time. We’re going to spend the next three or four days relaxing, getting room service, and making love, but mostly to let you get the rest you need to get healthy. I will also want you to drink as much as you can. The doctor said it would help.”
“I love the sound of being here alone with you for a few days.”
“I’m hoping you’ll be back to normal before we go home.”
“I know I will. With the sleep I got today, I’m feeling better already,” she said.
“Good. Go shower.”
“Yes, boss,” she said and laughed.
“Hey, now. Watch the brattiness.”
She wrinkled her nose at him and walked into the bathroom. He heard the shower turn on before he got in touch with Graham.
How’s it going?
His brother got back right away:Nothing yet. There had been several people in your bedroom for one reason or another over the last month.
Have you caught Una in there? Alastair texted.
No.
Okay. I’ll check in with you tomorrow. Get a hold of me if you find something.
I was planning on it. Get some sleep.
Alastair wrote,Good night, and set his phone to charge on the bedside, then placed his gun there so he could get to it quickly. He walked in to check on her and found her bent over, brushing her teeth with a towel wrapped around her. He leaned against the doorjamb and stared, knowing he’d never get sick of looking at her.
“Hey,” she said as she wiped her mouth.
“Hey. I can tell you’re tired. Let’s get you to bed.”
He walked her into the bedroom, pulled the towel away from her, and tucked her into bed. “I’ll be right back.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Get some rest.”
She rolled over, closed her eyes, and was out. Fuck, maybe he should have waited to bring her here in the morning instead of hustling her out in the middle of the night. His instincts told him he needed her away from the place, so they went.
When he got back after his shower, he slid in behind her, wrapped an arm around her middle, and slept.
He woke up in the morning with his arms full of his woman, and he couldn’t think of a better way to start the day.
When she started to move around, he nuzzled the back of her head. “Good morning.”
She stretched and smiled over her shoulder at him. “Good morning to you.”
“How do you feel?”
“A little better. I don’t have the pain, but I’m still kind of tired.”
“We’ll get you feeling great in no time.”
“I have to use the restroom.”
“Okay. I’ll order breakfast. Are you craving something special?”
“No, not really. I’ll eat anything you get us.”
“Okay.”
Alastair had the order in by the time she came out in one of his shirts. He found she preferred that to any of her own gowns, and it was okay with him. He loved seeing her in them.
They watched movies for the next few days, slept, and even made love when she felt better. On the third day, he surprised her with a chess set.
He decided they should stay an extra day away from home, giving Graham and Tony extra time to find evidence against Una. They played several games. Unfortunately, she won the majority, so she was rubbing it in. He ended up tickling her when she bragged.
It was just after dinner when he got a call. “Go ahead and find a movie, baby. I’ll be right back.”
“Okay.”
“What have you got?” he asked.
“The arsenic was in both the conditioner and body lotion,” Graham said.
“Fuck.”
