Epilogue

Five Years Later…

I’m hummingas I take the steps up to the cottage that I share with my wife and my son. The last rays of the day are setting over the sea, bathing the cove in warm strands of orange and violet that hang in the sky along with the last of the marshmallow-like clouds. I smile as I set down my bag with today’s catch in the cooler and head out to the back porch, where I find Nikki sitting on the porch with Alex in her arms.

She looks so gorgeous and maternal, rocking back and forth in the chair I made for her. It’s still creaking on the back right side, and I make a mental note to give it a little TLC this week. Woodworking is just one of the skills I managed to learn after cutting back my hours at the firm. I had to after Nikki gave birth.

Needless to say, she said yes to my proposal, and I took her to get a ring the very next day. We were married two months later, and she gave birth eight months after that. Everyone at the office was shocked. They didn’t even know I was dating, and then all of a sudden I was married and my new bride was expecting. On top of that, my ex-wife and stepson weren’t at the wedding.

There was some chatter, and the rumor mill was churning away for a while, but I didn’t mind. I was with my dream girl, and I still am. That’s all that matters.

I bought the cottage here in the Bahamas with the money we got from winning the case against Fall Banks Construction and gave hefty bonuses to the rest of the staff – and that was after the settlement funds were paid out to all the plaintiffs in the case. It was huge for everybody involved.

I step up behind my wife and slide my fingers into her hair. “Hey, gorgeous. Enjoying the sunset?” I inhale deeply, taking her scent into my lungs. Nikki looks up at me and smiles, little Alex sleeping peacefully in her arms. This right here, this is my own personal paradise.

“I was waiting on you to get back,” she says. “Catch anything?”

“I sure did. I’m becoming a master fisherman actually. What do you say I quit the firm, buy a small boat and some nets, and we just open a little seafood restaurant down here?”

“Hey, whatever makes you happy, baby.” Nikki giggles, turns, and kisses me on the wrist. She immediately jumps to her feet and smacks her lips. “But please wash your hands because you smell fishy!”

Laughing, I head back into the kitchen and scrub my hands clean with the tangerine-vanilla soap Nikki bought from a local shop that makes handmade soaps and dry them on a maroon hand towel.

“Thank God I have you to decorate this place,” I tell her as she comes up beside me. “Because if you weren’t here, I’m pretty sure it would just be—”

“A couch and a TV?” she asks with a grin.

“Exactly,” I chuckle. “The bare necessities.”

Carefully, I scoop my baby boy from her arms and carry him to his room. It’s crazy to me just how quickly he’s grown. I’ve seen it happen with other peoples’ kids, men and women who work for me, but you never fully appreciate it until it’s yours. Now, every time I look down at Alex, my brain instantly starts planning for the future.

“What do you think he’ll be?” I ask Nikki as I set him down in his bed and pull the blankets up to his chin. He makes an adorable little grunting noise and twists slightly to get comfortable, his eyes still closed, his hair a silly little mess. “Lawyer like his dad?”

“Fisherman?” Nikki suggests.

I shrug. “As long as he’s happy.”

“And what about you? Are you happy?”

I turn to my wife, who is wearing her favorite pair of short black shorts she likes to wear around the house and a white tank top with no bra. She has her hair pulled back and is wearing absolutely no make-up, which is how I like her best, as it allows me to fully appreciate her natural beauty.

“Am I happy?” I ask, grabbing two fistfuls of her ass and lifting her into my arms. She giggles, nuzzles into my neck, and wraps her legs around my waist as I close the door to Alex’s room behind us and carry her down the hall to our bedroom. “You make me the happiest man in the world, gorgeous. I thought you’d know that by now.”

I feel her lips twist into a smile against my skin as I set her down on the bed. “I know, but I like to hear you say it.”

I slip a hand up her shirt and cup one of her breasts, causing her to gasp just slightly. Her back arches, and I use that opportunity to tug her shorts down to her knees, exposing her pussy, which has just the slightest tuft of hair covering her slit.

“Like hearing what?” I whisper as I spread her open with two fingers. “That I’m absolutely addicted to your body?” I drag my middle finger up her opening and feel the wetness signaling her arousal. Nikki’s hands move between my legs as I start to quickly harden.

“That when I’m not with you I can’t stop thinking about you?” I ask, tweaking her nipple as it hardens between my fingers. She gasps again, kisses my neck, lapping at me with her tongue. “That you’re more than the mother of my child? That you’re my gorgeous fuck princess who takes my cock so fucking well?”

“Oh my God,” Nikki moans, slipping both hands down my pants and taking hold of my cock, which is now swollen and thick with blood. I’m absolutely insatiable for her and twist my head so my lips find hers. I slide my tongue into her mouth as she pulls down my pants, and then I kick them down to my ankles and position myself on top of her.

We both moan like it’s our first time together as I penetrate her. We wrap each other in a mutual embrace with our arms as I take her deep, giving her every inch I have to give. She takes them all so well now, even though she tells me she can still feel the sting and stretch when I first put it in.

This is it. This is us. Like we were made for each other.

I never speak to Reed or Elaine, but she still speaks to her parents on occasion. Only now, it’s on her terms. The terms of a famous, best-selling author. You’d have thought after her first mystery was a smash hit that her parents would have rethought their relationship with their daughter, found a way to be more supportive and accepting, but I guess some people are just narcissists to their core.

I, on the other hand, could not be prouder. Three books in and Nikki is still going strong, and I’ll be there to support her for as many more as she wants to write. And I hope she never stops. Because we’re a team now. An unstoppable team, and maybe that’s why the sex is so great.

“I love you, Grant,” Nikki whimpers as I begin to pick up the pace, do that one move that I know she loves and I know gets her there.

“I love you, Nikki,” I whisper back.

“Always?” she asks. I bring my eyes to hers and gaze deeply.

“Always.”
