ChapterTwenty

Logan

Bibi snapped off her earrings and followed Hugo toward the door. “I’m coming with you.”

“That’s not a good idea.” He was barely human at this point. “It will be hard to protect both of you.”

The last thing I should be feeling was envy around another wolf. And there was no fucking way another wolf should have to protect my mate.

“I don’t need anyone’s protection,” Bibi growled. “Don’t forget I’ve had you on the ropes before, wolf.”

Hugo looked back at her with fire in his eyes. His wolf broke through his skin, and Bibi pushed the door open so he could run free.

Bjorn’s gaze was glued to Marissa.

“We don’t have a plan in place for when this happens.” His voice had deepened, and he was close to shifting, too. “You need to stay here. Lock all the doors. Make sure all the humans in the office are accounted for. Don’t open the door for anyone. Text me if anything doesn’t seem right. Even if it seems insignificant, I wanna know. I might not get to read it right away, but I’ll read it when I can.”

“We’ll be fine.” She waved him off.

He stalked toward her, more bear than man. She swallowed hard.

“You don’t know that. Just do this for me, all right?”

She nodded.

And he was gone. It was just me and a wide-eyed Marissa who’d probably never been involved in a shifter fight before.

“What else does the text say?” I asked. “Where is she?”

Marissa shook her head. “That’s all it said.”

“Gimme your phone.”

She gasped and held it close to her. My wolf managed a growl. If this didn’t bring him bursting through, nothing would.

There was another notification from Sarah on the screen. Is everything cool there? I’m sure you’re busy, but I’m getting worried.

I hit the button to call her.

A kid was wailing in the background when she answered. “Marissa?”

“No. It’s Logan Mathis.”

“Oh. Mother of the moon. Okay. Not the time to freak out that my favorite actor just called me.” Sarah huffed out a breath. “Is Cindy with you? I have a really upset little girl who wants her mama.”

“She’s not. We weren’t expecting her.” There was no need to hold back. “Tell me everything you know.”

Sarah was in a panic, realizing that her worst fears were real. But she recounted the events as she knew them. Cindy said she was headed to Sunset Springs for something to do with the show, and she’d left over an hour ago. If she was here, we would’ve known by now. Hugo and Bibi would’ve found her in the lobby or the parking lot, and we could reunite an unhappy baby with her mama.

After we asked her what the hell she was thinking.

“Don’t let anyone who’s not involved with the show into the house,” I said.

“Wh-what if my dad or my brothers come?”

Fuck. Who the hell was I to get in the middle of pack allegiances? “You made a promise to Cindy that you’d watch her kids. Does your family have her family’s best interests in mind?”

“Nothing will happen to these kids on my watch,” she promised.

I handed the phone back to Marissa. My wolf took over my body, and I prowled the suddenly small studio.

“Are you going to shift?” she asked. “What can I do to help you?”

“Nothing.”

Fuck. I had done this so many times I knew what should’ve been happening next. My body temperature should have risen until I thought my human bones would simply melt away. That was when the beast inside me would burst through my skin.

But it wasn’t happening when I needed it most. No heat, no fur, no wolf.

Fuck.

My hands were in my hair, like I could rip myself open. Force my wolf out.

“Maybe she’s on her way here, and this is all a big misunderstanding,” Marissa said. “She might have stopped off at a friend’s house. Or went to the store.”

“Then why hasn’t Sarah heard from her?”

“Reception is pretty terrible between here and Green Mountain.” Marissa was grasping at straws. “Logan, you’re scaring me. Please let me help you.”

I pushed my jacket off my arms. Pulled at the collar of my shirt. “There’s nothing you can help me with.”

“Maybe it’s better that you stay human,” she offered. “Hugo, Bjorn, and Bibi are headed out to Green Mountain, looking for a fight. What if they start something we can’t stop? We don’t know that anything bad is happening.”

“You’re not a wolf, but you’ve got instincts. What are they telling you?”

“That a bad situation is about to get worse.” She threw her hands up in the air, and it was her turn to pace. “I’m scared out of my mind. I knew this could happen, taking this job, but like Bjorn said, once we started filming, we hit the ground running and I’m not sure what to do. I should know what to do.”

“Did you have any contact with Pedro after he came on stage?”

She shook her head. “I swear I didn’t.”

“None of the wolves in their pack have contacted you?”

“No! Listen, I made a mistake because I thought it would make the show more exciting. I pissed Bibi off. I want this job. I want you and Cindy to be happy.” She was panicking. She might not have done anything after she’d initially extended an invitation to Pedro, but she’d opened a door she couldn’t close. “I’m worried about you, Logan.”

“Don’t worry about me.”

“Do you need a glass of water?” she asked.
