“Very good. Come with me.” The woman opened a door down the hall, walked in, and handed the man her application. “Here’s Faith, sir.”

“Good. Come in, Faith, and sit down.”

Faith jumped when the door closed behind her, leaving the two of them alone.

He waved her over to his desk. “Come on, Faith. You have nothing to be afraid of.”

She nodded and walked to the chair he indicated. She set her bag down and sat.

“How are you this morning?”

She smiled brightly. “I’m great, sir.”

“Good. So, I’ve been thinking. I want you to work in the mailroom for now.”

“What would I be doing?”

“You’ll be delivering letters and packages to the people who work here. It’s a good way to learn the layout of the building. Do you think you can do that?”

“Yes. Absolutely.”

“Good. You’ll get eight hundred dollars weekly.”

Her eyes widened. That was more than she ever made before in her life. God, she might be able to have her own place.

“If something else comes available, we’ll get you in that if you’re willing and able.”

She nodded.

“Do you have any questions?”

“No, sir. Thank you for the opportunity.”

“I’m glad I could help.”

He looked down at her duffle bag. “What’s in that?”

She glanced down. “Oh, it’s just some things I’m taking over to a friend’s house after work,” she lied.

Her stomach flipped when he narrowed his eyes, and then she exhaled when he just nodded.

“Carolyn will show you where you can keep that and get you downstairs. Your supervisor is Bucky. He knows you’re coming.”

“Okay.”

He stared at her. “Have you eaten breakfast?”

She swallowed, smiled, and nodded. “Yes. A big one.” She patted her stomach.

She couldn’t remember the last time she ate, but there was no way she’d tell him that.

“Okay. Go on. I’ll check in with you later.”

Faith stood and grabbed her bag. At the door, she turned back. “Thank you for this opportunity. You have no idea how much this means to me.”

“I’m glad we met, Faith. Have a good day. If you have any questions, call up to Carolyn.”

“Yes, sir.”
