EPILOGUE
“Are you sure this is going to be okay?” Janet asked me, worry filling her voice.
Nodding my head, I held the door open for her. “This place has amazing food, no way am I missing out on a chance to eat here.”
She held her bag tightly in her hand as she entered the building. Sending a hesitant and nervous look my way, we walked forward until we approached the host stand. She stopped close to my side as she looked around.
Looking around myself, I could see that the restaurant was packed. Looking towards the guy that I learned was named Eugene, I sent him a smile. “Reservation for three,” I told him, “For outside seating.”
He looked at me and then over to Janet, “Will your third be joining you soon?” he asked curiously as he scratched out our names in his book.
Looking past the man and staring towards the door that led to the kitchen, I nodded my head. “He better be if he wants to keep his promise.” I told him, grumbling the last part. While he normally did, sometimes it took fighting tooth & nail to get him to leave that kitchen.
We were soon taken away by a waiter as he led us to our seats. There was an excitement growing in my chest as we approached our table. No matter how many times I had sat out here, it still left me feeling proud of this particular job. While I had even taken bigger jobs than this one since, none of them left me feeling the same way as this particular one did.
Those jobs didn’t give me a boyfriend either. So this one was special in more than one way.
As we headed outside, I had to hold back my smile as Janet gasped at this sight before us. Both of our attention went up to the sparkling lights that hung above us, lighting up our path to the tables lined up outside.
“It’s beautiful,” she gasped softly. It made me feel proud and happy that I had brought her along. Because I was with her, she was thankfully willing to join me.
I also wanted her to meet Rhett, the guy that she had only heard bad things about. I wanted her to meet the owner of this place, and by the car ride alone, I could tell if she was nervous. But after this, seeing her smile, I could tell that she was already feeling better about meeting him.
Once we were seated, our menus were handed to us and she was immediately gawking at the prices. I quickly assured her that she didn’t need to worry about it. I had things covered. And no, I didn’t intend on allowing Rhett to give us a free meal. After the first unpaid one, I made it very clear that I didn’t like things handed to me. Even if it was something as delicious as the foods he made.
Left alone once more, I was checking the time on my phone. Seeing that I didn’t have any messages from him, I grew impatient. I wanted to see him. Despite dating for nearly a five months now, it was hard to get us apart from each other. The only thing in our way was our jobs. And seeing how we both overworked ourselves, we agreed to ease away from being so focused on our careers.
Hence why he should be joining us soon. I even took an extra step to make myself more presentable. With Janet here with us, I couldn’t wait to see him try to hold back. Every time I dressed up for him, he always could barely control himself. Now, we didn’t have an excuse to run away to his office.
Deciding to turn my attention to my friend, we talked about the little things until he finally appeared.
Rhett was flushed as he approached us, already looking apologetic. “The place is packed,” he explained as he took the seat next to me. “I think it’ll be alright.” He reached forward and wrapped his large hand around mine, giving me a firm squeeze. Turning his attention to Janet, rose a brow. “This is your friend?”
That nervousness on her face reappeared instantly as she looked at me to save her from conversation. Instead, I decided to let her suffer. When realizing that I wasn’t going to help her out, she forced a smile and leaned forward with her hand out. “Janet, nice to meet you.” She then turned her attention to her drink, gulping down the wine that had been poured for us.
Hiding a smile, I leaned towards him and pressed my shoulder against his own. “She’s normally more talkative than this. She’s nervous.”
I noticed a hint of a smile on his face is he saw my own amusement. “Have you told her yet?” he asked curiously, his voice low just the way I liked it.
Feeling my face grow warm, I shook my head. “Not yet, I wanted to wait until you were here with me.” I explained before drumming my fingers against the table. I also intended on telling her once we had finished our meals and we’re settled down. Janet was my best friend and she would be the first to know the news. Now that I could hear the excitement in his voice, I was growing eager myself. After managing to go weeks without telling anyone else, it was finally time to reveal the truth.
Catching on that we were talking about her in hushed whispers, she turned her attention to us. “Told me what?” she asked curiously.
I couldn’t hide the grin on my face, “Set down the glass first.” I instructed, knowing exactly how she was about to respond. After doing so, I gave Rhett a hesitant glance. When he nodded, I sucked in a breath. “I’m pregnant,” I revealed my secret before biting my lip. “And I actually brought you here not just to meet Rhett, but we wanted to let you be the first to hear the news,” I informed her.
Before I could even react, her hands slapped against the table and she was up on her feet. Knowing damn well that she was attracting attention around us, she didn’t care as she looked at me. “Are you serious?” she asked incredulously. She asked me again before I even had the chance to reply.
While Rhett chuckled, I grew red at her loudness. Despite being embarrassed, I couldn’t keep the smile off of my face. After knowing something like this all the time and not being able to reveal it, I was I’m relieved to let out the secret. “Yes, now sit down before they asked us to leave.” I told her as Rhett snorted next to me. While I knew he would be the last person to ask me to leave, I needed her to relax.
When she sat down, she quickly grabbed my free hand. “The first time I finally get the courage to meet your boyfriend and the first thing you guys have to tell me is that you’re pregnant?” she groaned as she squeezed my hand. “Obviously, congratulations!” She exclaimed that she shook her head. “What are you going to tell me next? That you’re getting married?”
I bit my lip as I glanced over at Rhett, “With a baby along the way, who knows?” I offered, hoping to give her the answer she wanted. Expecting a ring before a baby was more in my plans but sometimes things went the way they wanted them to. This was something that couldn’t be controlled. But I was happy, eager that fate gone this way.
The waiter reappeared to take our order, giving us the distraction I needed. Once the man was gone, Rhett leans towards me, his breath brushing against my ear.
“That go as you planned?” he whispered to me.
Nodding my head, I couldn’t keep the smile off my face as I noticed how excited janet was becoming. Though it was months away, I couldn’t wait to bring a child into this world. Looking towards him, I could see how handsome he was and his undershirt, his chef coat was probably abandoned and his office. He didn’t need it to look good.
“I love you,” I told him softly, squeezing his hand as I was glad that he managed to make it to eat with us.
The warmth in his eyes grew at my words before he leaned over, capturing my lips any chaste kiss.
“I’m upset with myself that I haven’t met you sooner,” Janet complained in the background, groaning at our affection.
When I looked her way, I could have see her proving my decision on who I loved. From just this little, it was clear that Rhett wasn’t who many people thought he was. In my book, he was a sweet heart and the best man I could possibly ask for.
When our meal was brought to us, Janet had a thousand questions for both of us as she wanted to make up on the lost time. Answering all of them, my chest swelled with a happiness as Rhett squeezed my hand. This was it, this was my happy ending.
