« Prev  Chapter  Next »

Sara arrives again, and she brings a big breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, and fried tomatoes. I look at it and say, “Dear Lord, how am I going to finish it?”

Thad says, “You’ll need energy for that little girl of yours when you get home,” and Sara giggles.

“Enjoy your meal, Candy’s Daddy.” She looks at me and says, “You enjoy your meal, too, somebody else’s Daddy.” She pours the coffee as Thad chuckles.

“When are you going to find a Daddy, Sara,” he asks.

“As soon as one shows up to sweep me off my feet,” she says.

As she walks away, Thad says, “We should look around for her. She’s going to make a Daddy very happy someday.”

“Jesus, Thad,” I say. “Who are you? Are you the DDlg matchmaker in this town?”

“Eat your breakfast,” he says. “You’ll need your energy.” He smiles and takes a sip of his coffee, “and, by the way, the deal is an incredible deal, and I know I could sell all of the condos. So, stop being a baby about that, too.” He times his comment so I’m in the middle of a bite and can’t respond.

He's right about the deal. He’s right that it’s incredible This kind of deal is right in my sweet spot, too, a perfect pitch for a real home run. But I’ve been through this before, and I’ve failed before. It took everything that made me worthwhile from me. It almost killed me. At this point, maybe Annamarie is the only thing keeping me going.

Anna, my lifeline.

I can’t build another enterprise only to see it crash and burn. I can’t go through that again. The deal is a good deal but I came to this town to try to rebuild myself, and I’m just not ready yet. I thought I was, but I’m not.

I’m still a failure.

I’m still not qualified.

I won’t do it again.
