CHAPTER9

Early the next morning,Leo awoke to an empty bed.

Rolling onto his side he watched Cygny as she sat at her desk, her feet hitched up on the feet of her chair, her hair piled up on the top of her head in a messy bun.

She had an Apple Pencil held between her lips and a pair of glasses perched on her nose.

All she had on her body was her tank top and those pink bikini panties she’d tossed on the floor… three times since he’d shown up at her home.

Using the mouse on her desktop, she searched around and made a soft grunt of annoyance before she clicked and dragged something across her screen. The soft sound of rustling paper reached his ears and he smiled. She’d thrown away a document on her desktop and it seemed to transport him back in time to his apartment in Norfolk.

“Are you still using that set of sounds like my computer had when we met?”

She turned and looked at him over her shoulder, nodding before she turned back to the screen.

Sitting up in bed, Leo didn’t bother to tug the blanket up to cover him when it fell down to his thighs.

He didn’t mind being naked in front of her.

In fact, he was beginning to prefer it.

It gave her complete access to him, something that she’d taken advantage of a few hours before, waking him from sleep with her hands and mouth.

Just the thought of it woke up other slumbering parts of him and Leo scooted across the narrow bed and swung his legs down to the floor.

“Couldn’t sleep?”

She shrugged and he got up and picked up his boxers from the floor and pulled them up before he walked up beside her and leaned over to place a kiss on her shoulder.

“What are you doing?”

She pulled the pencil from between her lips and stabbed it through her bun before pointing to the corner of the screen. “Say hi.”

Frowning, he looked up and saw a man staring back at him.

“Uh, hi?”

The man shook his head, laughing. “So you’re Leo.”

The greeting confused him. “Yeah.”

Cygny was still working her way through several program screens, but she spared him a look and a smile while she did. “That’s Swede. He works for the Brotherhood in Montana.”

Swede gave him a half wave that reminded him a lot of Cygny’s half-distracted gestures when she was working. “Nice to meet you.” Swede cleared his throat. “I’m glad you’re wearing ‘something.’ If I’m bothering you, Cyg, I can call back later.”

She shook her head and closed a program window before bringing up another one. “Leo was sleeping, and I had a ping from one of my searches and I got up to do some research.” With a grin she leaned in toward the camera and grinned at the other man. “I’m almost sad he did get dressed,” she grinned, “I wonder what your face would have looked like when he came into view.”

Swede held up his hands in mock surrender. “I’m glad to let you keep all that to yourself. And well, Leo. Is this a… new thing?”

Leo reached out and pulled a chair up just shy of being beside her at the desk.

He sat down and spread his legs to fit her chair between them. “Somewhat,” was all the answer he gave the other man.

Swede made a quick exit soon after, promising to send Cygny the information she was requesting if he could find it, and then, they were left alone.

Cygny continued to work, but while she did, she’d turn her chair a little to the side and brush her thigh against his.

Leo leaned over her shoulder and read one of the screens. “What are you working on?”

She turned her head for a moment and her gaze roamed his face, leaving her with a smile.

When Cygny turned back to the screen, the smile stayed in place. “I’m still helping with a few skips for a bounty hunter that I met.”

Her eyes scanned the screen and she leaned in to look at the news feed going by.

“It was work that I could do easily on my computer, and I didn’t have to be on the streets with Landry and his crew. And like I said earlier, my experience was undercover in situations that didn’t necessarily need a sidearm. Landry and his men spend most of their time dressed like they’re SWAT officers. They expect some of their skips to fight back and I didn’t want any part of that.”

Leo leaned closer and rubbed his palm on her thigh, enjoying the heat he felt building between them. “You’re more than capable of handling yourself. You were on par with the others at the training in Wyoming. You even took Logan down.” Leo smiled at the memory of Logan Tackett sprawled out on his back in the dust.

Cygny dipped her chin to avoid his gaze, but she had the hint of a smile on her lips. Shaking her head she managed to mumble out a disclaimer of sorts. “I faked a cramp and waited for him to get frustrated enough to take his eyes off of me. That was the only way I was going to get someone his size to the ground.” She held out her hands to highlight her feminine shape. “I’m not light or anything, but I don’t look like the kind of woman who could take down a man of that size.”

“That,” Leo leaned forward and picked her up off of her chair and settled her on his thigh, “is why you’re good at your job. Covert operations don’t always need someone who looks like Maggie Q.”

He saw Cygny’s eyes open wide, and her jaw drop open.
