Fay's Six
Walker rolled to the side, clutching his gut. He blinked.
“He’s been hit,” she said as calmly as she could. She ripped Walker’s shirt and put pressure on the wound.
“You’re going to fucking pay for that.” Stone kicked Lee’s weapon aside and lifted him to his feet. “I should beat the shit out of you, but I don’t have time for that.”
Sparrow and another officer barreled into the foyer.
Fay focused on Walker. “It’s going to be okay,” she whispered.
He took her hand. “I don’t know,” he said weakly. “That hurt.”
“I’m sure it did.”
“You’re hurt,” he said with a ragged breath. “You’re going to need stitches.”
“I’m going to be all right.” The blood soaked his shirt. She gripped his wrist, checking his pulse. She glanced up at Sparrow. “Where’s the ambulance?”
“Three minutes out.” Sparrow knelt next to Walker. “Hang tight.”
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Tears burned Fay’s eyes. For the first time in her life she wanted to share her world with someone, and now, thanks to the likes of Lee, a future that she hadn’t even known she wanted was being threatened.
“No. You’re not.” She bent over and kissed his forehead. “You and I have a lot of living to do together.”
He smiled. “I like the sound of that.” His grin faded and his eyes grew heavy.
“Walker. Don’t you dare leave my six now.”
* * *
Fay pacedin the emergency room for what seemed like an eternity. She paused and glanced at the clock on the wall.
It had been four hours since they took Walker into surgery and not a single doctor or nurse had told them a fucking thing.
“Relax,” Sparrow said as she put her arm around Fay. “They said it could be a while.”
“We have to go on the idea that no news is good news,” Stone added.
“Not in my world.” Fay let Sparrow guide her to a chair. She sat down and instead of pacing she chewed on a nail.
Walker had lost a lot of blood and they had no idea what kind of damage the bullet had done. Or if it had hit any vital organs.
“He’s going to be fine,” Stone said. “This isn’t his first rodeo.”
“Thanks for the reminder.” Fay slumped forward and cradled her face in the palm of her hands. She tried to tell herself that at least Lee was not only going to face murder charges, but that the full weight of the United States Navy was going to come down on his ass. That man was going to go away for a very long time.
“Hey.” Sparrow tapped her shoulder. “The doctor’s here.”
Fay jumped to her feet and raced across the room. “Is he okay? Can I see him?”
The doctor stuffed his hands in his white coat. “Walker is going to be fine. We were able to remove the bullet, which didn’t do any major damage. We’re going to keep him a day or two, but otherwise, he’ll be as good as new. He’s in recovery and quite groggy, but you can go see him.”
Fay couldn’t help but let the tears flow. She swiped at her cheeks. “Thank you,” she managed. “Where do I go?”
“Through those doors.” The doctor pointed over his shoulder. “Past the nurses’ station and he’s the fourth door on the right. I’ll warn you though, he’s pretty out of it, so don’t expect too much.”
“I just want to sit with him.”
The doctor nodded. “I’ll be by in a bit to check on him.”
Fay turned to her friends. “Do you want to come?”
