Light Me Up

“It gives them all a bad name,” Miller chimed in. “Down in Salem, a guy was arrested for beating up a fisherman. Put the poor dude in a coma.”

“Shit,” Dane’s eyebrows raised. “You think they’d resort to arson though?”

“I don’t know. Seems counter-intuitive, since fire isn’t all that good for the environment, but they’re not all playing with a full deck.”

“We haven’t had too many issues here, though,” Miller added.

“That’s true. I uh, know one of the chapter leaders. She’s a straight shooter. Works hard and believes in the cause. But I don’t know everyone involved.”

“You gonna talk to Sara? See if she knows anything?” Miller wondered. My stomach was fully sour now, and my pulse quickened. I didn’t like this one bit. But it had to be done.

“Yeah. I’ll talk to her about it tomorrow.”

We sat for a while longer, going over the details of Dane’s report that he had finished earlier that evening. We couldn’t do a whole lot with the evidence until the lab results came back, but reading the report gave me a clearer picture of how it all happened. And as much as I wasn’t looking forward to interviewing Sara about all this—especially after her own scare—it would hopefully help us move the investigation forward.

I just hoped that we could figure this out before anything else burned down.
