Obsessive Boss (Bratva Brothers 4)
Nothing gets past the man.
"Well, he found me." I shrug and glance up at the display for the floor, wanting the elevator to open already. The small space is constricting, especially with Barrett's stare. At least there isn't anyone else in the elevator with us.
"It's clear Anton's got feelings for you. I just can't tell if you harbor feelings for him."
"I don't," I say a little too quickly. "It was just an assignment, nothing more." My stomach flops at my own words. I can't stop thinking about him being carted away, arrested, and imprisoned. There's no evidence to convict Anton, but I can't help but worry that Agent Danvers will do something to change that. Plant evidence to ensure Anton is convicted.
"Right, even so, you should take the rest of the day off."
"Sir—"
"That's not a suggestion," Barrett says. "Go home."
I don't want to leave, but it's not as though I'm being given much choice. "Fine, I'll grab my things and head out."
The elevator doors open, and I hurry down the hallway to grab my bags. In a matter of minutes, I'm carting my suitcase back to the elevator, and I hit the button, waiting for the doors to open. It takes forever, and once the elevator arrives, I step in and hit the button for the lobby. I'll grab a cab on my way out and head home.
Anton's warning echoes in my mind. But why would he come here to tell me his team will kill me? None of it makes any sense.
It's probably nothing more than a trick to scare me and convince me to trust him. But why would he want me to do that after my betrayal? I pinch the bridge of my nose, my head is beginning to throb, and I'm relieved when I reach the lobby.
I cart my luggage across the floor toward the exit when I breeze past two individuals in suits. They're familiar. I'm sure I've seen them before, but I can't pinpoint where. Here, at the bureau, or someplace else?
Goosebumps cover my arms, and a shiver courses through me as they step into the awaiting elevators.
The doors begin to close, and I gasp when I realize that the clean-shaven men are two Russians, both prominent members of the bratva.
Nikita and Dmitri.
