‘Not reinvent,’ he clarified. ‘Refine. My staff will help you,’ he said, and then corrected himself. ‘Your staff will help you prepare for the announcement of our engagement and for our wedding.’

‘Wedding?’

‘One week from today.’

‘A week?’ she gasped. ‘Why so fast?’

‘We must be married before I take the crown,’ he explained. ‘That is why every decision—every item you pack away—is crucial.’

She nodded. Small continuous nods. ‘Will I see you before?’

‘No.’ He turned away from her, ignoring the pull to stay with her—to stay close—and opened the door.

‘That’s it? That’s all you’re going to say?’

He didn’t look back. ‘There is nothing else to say, Charlotte,’ he told her over his shoulder. ‘Find a way to forget the woman you are and become a queen.’

He closed the door without a second glance and walked back the way he’d came.
