When We Dance

“What do you want me to say?”

“You brought her there. You knew how she was.”

Francisco doesn’t take it lightly, his eyes flickering with anger.

“She was fucking fine.”

“How was she?” Alejandro insists.

I can see Francisco’s blood boiling.

“How do you think she was, motherfucker, if we barely made it there? She sucked me off in the car on Brickell Avenue.”

“On Brickell Avenue?”

“I pulled on a secondary road. I told you already. What difference does it make?”

We all go quiet.

“She pulled a prank on us,” I say, finally seeing through her game.

Alejandro shifts his eyes to me.

“Meaning?”

“She was angry she didn’t get the attention she wanted, so she left. I don’t know if she had planned to have us at each other’s throats, but that’s where we are, so it’s working. The thing is, she’s still out there, and her thirst for revenge might bring upon her something worse.”

I call her cell again obsessively. Although it’s useless. I know she’s not going to answer. I grit my teeth, my chest flooded with frustration. It was my fault, after all. I talked to her last.

They’re right.

She told me she would leave. Even if she did that… Still… I never thought she’d go out on her own. Not that she isn’t allowed to go out. It’s just that I didn’t think she’d do it.

A few cars roll to a stop in front of the hotel. I move my focus to them before locating the driver.

He deposited her here more than an hour ago.

No. He didn’t see her leave with someone else.

Okay.

That’s it. The man has no idea where she is. I look across the water. She could be anywhere. The restaurants and clubs are packed.

She could be with someone else by now.

In someone else’s company, I mean. Anything is possible, right?

We could wait for her to come back. I’m not going to wait.

I shift my eyes to the entrance of the hotel.

“She can’t be far…” I say.

I’m right. But she could be anywhere. From sipping a cocktail on a terrace, eating sushi in a restaurant, dancing in a club, being invited to a private party to already talking to another man.

She looked like a million bucks, and I can’t believe I couldn’t see this coming. I’m usually much better than this at reading people.

She must be really pissed.
