“Because I am the best lawyer they have.”

“Cocky much,” I mutter.

He ignores my statement. “You can work from the conference table. We will have other paralegals and lawyers in and out of here helping with cases. Most work from their own offices or one of the conference rooms. But as my assistant, you can work in here so you can get me what I need.”

“Like what?” I ask, not keeping the attitude out of my voice.

“Coffee, lunch, dry cleaning—”

“I wasn’t hired to be your servant.”

He crosses his arms over his chest. “No, you were hired because you called your brother desperate for a job.”

My mouth drops open, and before I can say anything, he continues to talk.

“If I need something, you will see to it. It’s fortunate you have a paralegal certificate so I can have you assist with cases as needed. Start with the one in your hand. I need you to go through all thirty depositions and find any information that doesn’t match.”

“Match what?”

“Anything anyone else said and anything in the police report.”

“What’s the case for?”

“Capital murder. And as far as I can tell, the man is guilty. But as my client, he’s innocent. And we need to make sure that’s what the jury sees.” He looks down at his watch. “I have a phone call and then a meeting. I expect lunch when I get back. You will find my schedule and my preferences on your laptop.” He gestures toward the one on the table. “If you have questions, make a list. I’ll see to them when I am free.”

He turns and sits at his desk, picking up the phone.

Well then. This is not the man from the other night.

And it secretly turns me on. But I am never telling him I like to submit.
